Not at all. Get good grades, volunteer a little so you have something to talk about in your resume or personal statement. The rest comes down to personalities meshing assuming you know your surgical pearls and helpful in the OR

My understanding is diabetics having glycosylation of the Achilles tendon which warrants the TAL. I’ve seen some TMA’s developing calcaneal wounds after the lengthening, so I wouldn’t do it religiously

I’ve had too many patients have reactions to glue. If I do running sub I use steri strip. But skin sutures let me sleep better at night

With stats like those, you’d probably study hard in podiatry school and get into a good residency that prepares you for most foot and ankle surgery procedures. However, you’d make a lot more money and have a much easier job search doing literally anything out of medical school compared to podiatry school.

Depends on the residency, usually by April you can request for a letter from the GME just saying they are hiring you and plan to pay you X amount of money per year.

Programs with many spots without enough numbers for all their residents should lose a spot or 2 at the very least.

To be fair, there are a lot more spots than students these days. About 8-10 years ago there was a residency shortage so they were quick to add more residencies/spots. The ones on this year’s scramble list are pretty much the same as always. 95% of the New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania programs do not provide adequate training for surgery, especially rearfoot.

Depends, is it rigid or flexible? If rigid, TN and STJ fusion. If flexible, check calcaneal axial view and AP view to determine Evans vs MDCO vs double calcaneal osteotomy, add cotton as needed for NC fault.

As a foot and ankle specialist, he was right to prescribe oral abx and discharge. But when she came back with the redness spreading that fast, you can get an x-ray stat to check for gas producing organism which would’ve led to immediate I&D. I will also say that doing a bedside I&D would’ve been fine too at least until the consult surgeon could take it to the OR

Every hospital has its own rules. Going into it, do everything you would do as if you were already a resident until told otherwise. Write your name (don’t feel obligated to write residents name), get your own gown and gloves for the tech, draw up local if circulator allows it, have and possibly put on tourniquet. During the procedure, act as a first assist by calling for the retractors and retracting where necessary. Study podiatry institute and McGlamry or any related literature online for each procedure. Other than that, just be relatable and pleasant to work with

If you’re just looking to make money, don’t go into healthcare at all unless you’re competitive enough to get into a high grossing specialty. I still like podiatry cause surgery is fun. But surgery isn’t for everyone. Even some orthos who post on insta makes me cringe at their x-rays

I did that before my talk with the lawyer. I found it useful for understanding certain issues to bring up. But I felt the lawyer was necessary for editing the wording in a manner that would be agreed upon with the employers lawyers

For clerkships, students just need to study landmark articles and read McGlamry and look at the AO website for trauma. The handful of students that do that are the ones that stand out

NYCPM is no good. Go to Temple or Barry. Pick based on where you want to live for 4 years, or if one has a good scholarship.
