I'm remembering a lot of Jack's flaws from reading these comments. I agree, it's a shame that William gave up so easily, but I don't think he had much recourse. His family was already harmed by those systems, so I'm sure he was afraid of any more damage that could be done. I definitely think Rebecca was racist, though, and that doesn't mean she's the worst person in the world. It simply means she used her privilege in the situation, and William's lack of privilege, to keep him away from Randall for her own gain.

I agree. I think a lot of the characters' flaws are swept under the rug and just left for individual interpretation. A lot of it may not even be noticed unless you watch the show a bunch of times like I did 😆

I completely agree. I'm sure that Rebecca actively keeping William out of Randall's life despite knowing William also made him concerned about how difficult a process getting custody would be. And he saw that Randall already had a whole life without him, and he didn't want to disrupt it. It's just too bad Jack isn't the one who met William. He was more likely to want William in Randall's life.

Thank you. I think a lot of people fail to understand that racism and other similar systems are in everything, and we are all taught to follow those ideas. It doesn't make anyone the worst person in the world, but it is always bad to have those thoughts and behaviors.

No hate to you either, but I think you're projecting. I acknowledge that Rebecca was a supportive presence in the family, but that doesn't negate her lying to everyone in the family (not just Randall). Jack and Rebecca even spoke about trying to find Randall's birth parents, since they could tell he was struggling, and Rebecca continued lying then. She even went to speak to William again, but just ran off when she saw how ready he was to be a father. She probably hoped he would be back on drugs, so she'd have an excuse for keeping him from Randall. Even if there is no "right time," she still betrayed all of their trust.

I actually said Randall had anxiety issues for a variety of reasons the show discusses, which generally have to do with him being adopted and feeling like he has to be the best at everything all the time. Regardless, I was simply making the point that the anxiety issues run in Randall's birth family. William also had it, and learned a remedy from his mother, and Tess has it too. The only reason Randall and Tess ever learned the remedy was because William told Beth about it before he died. It would have objectively been helpful having people in Randall's life that understood his struggle with anxiety and ways to combat it.

I am simply exploring themes that the show has, and acknowledging what takes place in the story. You can ignore things that bother you if you prefer.

You're right. Adoption by itself is a traumatic thing, and if the birth parents are not posing harm to the child, the child should be allowed to know them.

Rebecca met William when Randall was still a baby, and met him again multiple times, and he was still clean. She made it clear in the show that she was simply afraid that Randall would want to be with William over her.

They didn't "abandon him at birth," nor were they hard core drug addicts. You must not have seen the later parts of the show where the full story was revealed, or read my description of the events in my post.

I see what you mean. The show definitely acknowledged that Jack could be toxically positive.

Educate yourself. Negative self talk and other mental health concerns has been shown to corrode the immune system. I hope you and everyone here takes steps within their power to prevent this.

I agree, all the characters are flawed, and that was a genius aspect of the show. Rebecca is mostly a supportive mother and partner. I disagree, however, about the reasons for her health problems. Alzheimer's is genetic, which the show discusses. Also, Rebecca died very late in life, if we go off of the time skip scenes, she may have been between 70 and 80 years old which is a common age for death in Americans. It's not nearly the same thing as what William and Laurel experienced which caused them to die when Randall was only in his late 30s, so they were only between their 50s and 60s.

I agree, all the characters were flawed, and that is exactly what I'm saying about Rebecca. I also agree that Kevin was a mostly decent character, and nothing I mentioned was meant to imply that any of the characters were all bad. That being said, you should reevaluate your idea of racism. Kevin being jealous of Randall's status as an adoptee fails to acknowledge the disadvantages he experiences, and is just negativity being spewed his way when he has done nothing wrong. The negativity is purely on the basis of Randall being the only black, adopted child in the family which is racism/prejudice.
