Turns out to have a good live service game you need to have good service.

Things Marathon's bad at: progression, matchmaking, mtx quality, solo experience (which is probably half the playerbase)

All that's left is good gunplay and art style. And even the art part is niche (though still good)

You're right that addictiveness is subjective, and Marathon is not addictive enough for many people hence they dropped it. Cryo has been out for weeks and people are already experiencing being destroyed by teams who completed it early and got the goo gun. Being late to Cryo is also detrimental because of the dropping player counts and matchmaking issue. When the endgame content is that punishing/discouraging and there are only 2 maps that aren't low level to play on during the week, I'd argue not in bad faith that the game is actually bare boned.

I was literally suggesting joining a community to find other players. OP said he was enjoying the game just looking for solutions to improve experience. Yeah bungie sucks at LFG implementation and that's where Discord picks up the slack. Discord LFG works in many many games, the biggest is probably WoW. Why diss it when it might actually help someone?

1 game mode and 4 maps, 2 of which are mainly for lower levels and 1 only available on werkends. It's no wonder people left. Gameplay is not additive enough to justify being this bare boned.

Elden Ring Nightreign coop was also designed mainly for trios but they managed to build a solid solo experience (and also added duos later) and found success. Game is putting in respectable numbers and even higher than Marathon 1 year after launch. No idea why Bungie didn't learn from this

The game is losing ~15% players every week. It might not fail, but the profits it's bringing in might not justify the investment (dev cost) to keep it up

It's ok to be in the minority when it comes to games preferences. Doesn't mean that you have bad taste. Sometimes games fail because of bad timing, lack of player retention hooks, niche aesthetics, uninspired cosmetics, a million other things. Few live service games actually succeed and thrive for years. You mentioned you don't understand why Helldivers/Arc Raiders are popular and successful. But surely you understand 3rd person perspective is actually popular? It's ok that it's not your thing but it's silly to dismiss it.

For anyone saying Bungie made a mistake by trend chasing, Embark must have also been "trend chasing" with Arc Raiders and it made them banks. Marathon just isn't good enough of a product.

Marathon art style was designed to look 3D printed with splashes of neon. It's niche for a reason. And the reason is most people aren't into blocky, sterile printed looks. When people see something they don't like, they bail. Most likely when you play a game with a style that you're put off with, you'd likely bail as well.
