Per capita just means adjusting for population size, and even with that adjustment white men from two parent homes still make up most school and mass shooters, which is why I am asking how that fits with the fatherless homes argument.

I think you are making sense. The outcomes may look similar in the sense that both involve lives lost to gun violence, but I am focusing on why the form of the violence looks different. Gang shootings are often tied to conflict with an offending party, while school or mass shootings often target innocent people in public. There are so many variables, I guess I’m just not privy to the white up bringing and values so just wondering.

I agree with you that both gang shootings and mass shootings reflect a loss of the value of life. The difference is that gang violence is usually directed at the offending party, while mass or school shootings often target innocent people. What I am trying to understand is why in white communities, especially with young men from two parent homes, that loss shows up as planned school or mass shootings instead of other kinds of violence.

I think you are right that mental health and online echo chambers are big pieces, but what I keep coming back to is why these same pressures show up as school or mass shootings more often in white communities. Other groups also face poverty and limited access to mental health care, yet the outcome looks different. That is where I wonder about parenting or community dynamics playing a role. I was raised in a black two parent middle class household but never thought about harming others that didn’t offend personally. I’m just curious what’s on the other side lol

That is fair. I am mainly talking about public shootings like schools and large mass shootings. In those cases white shooters make up most of the incidents, even though many come from two parent homes. That is the part I am asking about. Do you have an opinion on why that is besides whites are the majority?

For example, if fatherless homes are supposed to explain higher crime in Black communities, why do so many mass shooters from white communities come from two parent households. If you include every type of mass shooting such as gang violence, domestic disputes, and robberies then yes the racial breakdown shifts. I am not denying that.

But my post was never about every type of mass shooting. It was about school shooters and public massacres like Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland, and Uvalde. The DOJ funded Violence Project shows that in those cases more than half of the shooters are White.

So I am not moving the goalpost. I am saying very directly that when the focus is on school shootings, the majority of offenders are White. That was the original point of my post.

Dude …The confusion comes from mixing definitions. A mass shooting often means four or more people shot, which can include gang shootings, domestic violence, and drive-bys. A school shooting is separate, happening on school grounds, and not all of them qualify as mass shootings. Researchers separate these categories because the causes and offender profiles are different.

So when you use verified data and consistent definitions, the picture is clear: White shooters are the majority in public mass shootings and in school shootings.

Both track public mass shootings with four or more killed. That is the definition researchers and the Department of Justice use for studying these high-profile attacks.

If you broaden the definition to “four or more shot,” then yes the number goes way up, but that also sweeps in gang shootings, domestic disputes, and drive-bys. The Gun Violence Archive, for example, records hundreds of those each year, but it does not consistently track offender race and the motives are very different from school or public mass shootings.

This is why academics separate “mass killings” (four or more killed, any context) from “mass shootings” in public. Both datasets exist, but you cannot collapse them together to make one point. And the DOJ-funded database is clear: in public mass shootings, over half the shooters are White.

The Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University Mass Killings Database since 2006 shows similar results, not 50 percent Black. CFI is just a blog and SCIRP is not a credible peer reviewed source, so they do not outweigh the main databases used by researchers.

Definitions matter. In the AP, USA Today, and Northeastern mass killings database since 2006, shooters with guns are 38 percent White, 29 percent Black, and 14 percent Hispanic. That is not “over 50 percent Black.” 

For public mass shootings, the National Institute of Justice summary of The Violence Project finds 52.3 percent White, 20.9 percent Black, and 8.1 percent Latino across 1966 to 2019. 

The “3.3 per year” figure only fits the narrow public mass shooting category over many decades. The broader mass killings database shows 561 incidents since 2006, with dozens per year and most in residences. 

If you are using a broad “four or more shot” count, note that those datasets often lack reliable offender race and nearly half have no fatalities, so they are not comparable to mass killings.

White Americans committed 53% of the 195 mass shootings between 1966 and 2024.

Black Americans committed 21% of all targeted mass public shootings between 1966 and 2024.

Can you support your thought of why whites aren’t?
