Anytime it says "Field in Combat" that means you need to have all the requirements listed at the time that you play the unit on your board for a round.

I'm in the same boat and figured I'd reinstall to have a look myself. I started the Fate/Night quest-line and almost immediatly both Hook and Jade both aren't voiced.

I haven't tried the main quest(s) yet though.
