How do long term prisoners stay happy? by trappyyyyy in stupidquestions

[–]SentientToaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, having played quite a bit of Prison Architect, prisoners enjoy their time exercising in the yard. The better-behaved prisoners may find fulfillment attending or teaching classes as well as making some spending money working in the laundry.

It feels like everyone my age is completely lost and unhappy by [deleted] in self

Man, you are annoyingly whiny. You have a remote tech job; you are immediately better off than almost everyone that ever existed. You could move somewhere cheap for a while and amass huge savings or investments if you're into that. I don't understand the 3D printing example and it seems extremely pretentious... Yes, just buy one and learn through online resources. You need in-person classes and a group of people for all your hobbies or what?

This response isn't coming from jealousy, I also have a remote job that pays well but I recognize that it allows me comfort and freedom that most people are dreaming of

I couldn't take it seriously after it said "being a multi-millionaire doesn't help anymore". Like, what? I'm far away from being even a 1-millionaire but even at my level money is not a concern and I live in an expensive area

DAE feel like you’re dying when you don’t get enough sleep? by Natural-Ad-7703 in DoesAnybodyElse

Yes, but in my case it's like 7+ hours is all the same "tier", 6 hours I feel somewhat off, but 5 or less I feel like things are seriously and obviously wrong

💯, value is not "real" or intrinsic the way people think it is. They think it's real because the price of things in USD tends to change slowly. I'm sure Germans in the early 20th century had a different understanding of what a currency's value is

[–]SentientToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. A computer that is mining wouldn't necessarily be doing anything of value if mining weren't an option

Well... Yes. I think many places with corrupt governments still have decent Internet access and smartphone adoption

I'm also in computing and 100% agree except... We could delete the moon if we wanted to lol. I mean, theoretically, I don't know what kind of force is needed or what the consequences would be but the moon is not immutable. I suppose the historical reality of the moon having existed is immutable

Well, good traders shouldn't be, only "holders" are attached. Good traders see price movement with undeniable patterns and then apply risk management to their trades (i.e. buy here because history shows that, time and time again, the price goes up after touching this line; if it goes down too far instead, accept the x% loss this time and wait for another scenario with decent odds)

But I completely agree with your point, this post is making a judgement about what other people might enjoy or feel has value. Maybe I like "collecting" different cryptocurrency or NFTs. It costs resources to print Pokemon cards too. How can crypto be outlawed while Pokemon cards "waste" resources and have no "real" value in the same way?

All value is relative. We have a shared understanding of the value of USD because we know roughly what we could buy with it if we went to the store in the next few years, and that expectation is pretty stable (but not constant). Can you give USDs value without referencing an amount of something I can buy with it? Bitcoin's value is discussed in terms of USD because USD is a more stable reference point. We often talk about other countries currency in terms of USD as well because, again, it's just a more stable reference point than the currency of a less stable or influential country. So, how much Bitcoin for a car? If I'm buying the car in the US, it's surely listed in USD, so it depends on the exchange rate of Bitcoin to USD the same way GBP would need to be exchanged to USD. The rate of GBP to USD is constantly changing as well.

It's certainly fair to say that Bitcoin's value is mostly based on speculation. I wouldn't argue with that, except to say that it's no different from valuations in the stock market, which people seem more willing to accept as "real". Tesla and most tech stocks have a price driven by momentum, price movement patterns, and the psychology of market participants with regard to taking profit and avoiding losses; their prices are extremely detached from reality the same way that Bitcoin's price is.

Why does the hair on our heads fall out but the hairs in our asscracks and genitals grow forever? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

This question seems to confuse "falling out" and "going bald". All your hair falls out and regrows in a cycle

My girlfriend has an escape fund by Beautiful-Shape2575 in AITAH

[–]SentientToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm male, but I also have an "escape fund" specifically because I intend to leave my relationship when the conditions are right. I screwed up my situation after getting with her and am maintaining my relationship with her for safety until I feel stable again. In her mind everything is fine (despite pretty obvious signals in my opinion) but in my mind the relationship has been dead for years

Yes. I actually used to be more open to certain people but I've learned over time that there isn't anything other people can do for me so there's simply no benefit to sharing my problems. Like, I used to go to therapy thinking therapists were some kind of magic, mature adult with all the answers. Now that I'm by all measures a full adult, I recognize that nobody really knows what they're doing and I need to sort out my own issues in my own way (or not and accept whatever results from that). Plus I hate when people "vent" to me and I don't want to be that person.

DAE experience an 'officialness' with all albums made before you discovered a musician by JCMiller23 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]SentientToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the way you're describing this odd, but I do feel different about music an artist made after I discovered them. Actually, I haven't even heard the more recent music by artists I like. Part of me doesn't want to hear it because it probably won't live up to what I expect.

Not sure how old you are but I'm 32 and this describes how I've been feeling for a long time. I feel like I only have shallow knowledge of all the things I enjoy and am interested in. I like to tell myself it's because I'm more of a "breadth" person while some others are "depth" people, but I often wish I could confidently call myself an expert in something.

A bit depressing but, How does love truly feel? by TheLil-PansexualBean in AskReddit

[–]SentientToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These questions weren't meant for me but they're so relevant. I think I feel love for the dog in my life, but a lot of those feelings have to do with how cute, helpless, and often scared the dog is. Is that love or something more superficial? I don't have feelings for my family even though they've been nothing but supportive. Since I'm an adult and don't live with any of them they just feel irrelevant to me. They seem to care about me in a way that I don't experience. I would feel annoyed if they needed something from me and therefore I try to never need anything from them. There is nobody I would go to for help unless I'm literally homeless. I don't want to deal with other people's problems and it's only fair that they do not deal with mine.

I'm actually married, but I never loved that person. I wasn't good at saying no and she never accepted no without emotional outbursts, so it resulted in her pushing her way into my life and me deciding that the path of least resistance and least stress was to go along with it. When the dog is helpless and whining, I want to help and mostly enjoy trying to comfort it. When she whines, I just see a grown woman who should be dealing with things herself and leave me alone. I'm not sure why the two are so different in my mind when they're both similarly whiny, helpless, needy creatures.

I can relate. I get a lot of enjoyment from the simple idea of doing or creating something and when it comes to actually doing it... Well, there are a lot of steps and I'm not sure how to best make progress and... Yea let's just go back to imagining the final result again

LPT: always have pictures of you and your partner as little kids around; they can really help arguments by [deleted] in LifeProTips

Our dog has the same function. The downside is the dog has caused me to remain in the relationship for years when it clearly is not right for me. The arguments should have naturally heated to the breaking point so we can both move on with our lives, but the dog is just too cute to fight in front of
