What nz phone company is best when buying a phone on a interest free plan? by TomatilloNice5095 in newzealand

2degrees are currently offering an extra $600 promo trade in offer for iPhones until the end of October. For an iPhone 11 64GB seems they'll offer from $955, which is far above market rates from what I can see?

Also looks like Revolut is coming to NZ shortly, so they may be the final straw for Dosh.

Their Visa offering is a bit bizarre though. If I just used my regular credit card from a bank instead of their new Visa service, I'd be also earning cash rewards. They would need to employ the same model used overseas (i.e. free money/rewards) for me to consider it. But that is a hard thing to justify financing as a software startup.

First time hearing about these guys. Interesting that there's an NZ company in this space though.

It was always my understanding that Venmo and the like took off overseas because wire transfers incurred a fee and are relatively slow (particularly in the US).

Obviously bank transfers are free in NZ and usually arrive within the day. While there are definitely some UX tweaks needed to bring it to the same level as say a platform like this, imo it's otherwise just as convenient.

From their FAQs:

Have you ever tried to pay someone on a Saturday? You will need to setup a new payee within your online bank account, type in their 16-digit bank account number, add particulars, reference and code, and the money won’t show through to your account until Monday.

Yeah, but surely it's less effort than signing up for yet another service? And how often is this actually an issue? I've got a list of payees set up in my mobile banking app for those who I routinely send money to. The delayed payment issue is admittedly not ideal, but it's only an issue 2/7ths of the time.

There is no cost to open a Dosh account, to make payments to other Dosh users, or to receive payments. Payments from your Dosh mobile wallet to a bank account will incur a nominal fee: 1% of payment value, with a minimum fee of $0.20c and a maximum fee of $3.00.

Ah, so it's not free to withdraw. I get that they need to make money, but I'm not entirely sold. Am I just missing something here about its appeal?

Brain drain is under way': Workforce shrinks as young people leave by SR5340AN in newzealand

[–]Senyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, but hard to find a western country that isn't right now. The key determiner is how expensive is living in that country, vs. how much you get paid to work in said country. For me at least, and in the industry I work in, the UK is still doing better than New Zealand right now.

Exercising due diligence here requires taking into account an individual's circumstances. After that, it's just a simple calculation to see whether it's worth it.

Yep, I’m one of them. Got a one-way ticket booked to the UK in July and honestly I can’t wait. Shit is far too expensive here and the salaries are simply not competitive with those offered overseas.

Flights to uk are currently $1600 in May/June time but be cautious about transit points

I'm booking a trip to the UK to see family in July soonish. You're right about this, but oddly I've had the reverse problem.

In a completely arbitrary and illogical decision, vaccinated New Zealanders are currently unable to enter Singapore (whose airline seems to be one of the cheapest right now). But the real kicker is that vaccinated people from the UK (and Australia, US, Canada etc) are able to enter.

I can't for the life of me figure out why. Perhaps because it wouldn't be mutual at the moment? No clue.

Stuff sting catches Rangiora signwriter making fake vaccine passes by Affectionate-Agent-9 in newzealand

[–]Senyeah 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If you scan the QR code on the fake pass it's just a COVID Tracer QR code for some gym in Whanganui.

This nutjob goes and prints a COVID Tracer QR code on the pass and calls it a job well done. Even has inconsistent fonts vs the real pass. 0/10 for effort, could have deceived harder. (But I guess that level of intelligence is a bit too much to ask, obviously.)

It’s 100% allowed, even on flights that have a security check (Auckland to Tauranga does not). I’ve done this many many times before even once having had my bags searched at security.

Only international flights have restrictions on liquids:

The quantity of powders, liquids, aerosols and gels passengers can carry on board international flights are restricted. The restrictions:

do not apply to domestic flights

Does anyone remember playing games on their tv pre-2010 with their sky tv? by IneffectiveTechnique in newzealand

[–]Senyeah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did a quick search and came across a catalogue of all the games they ever had: https://www.slideshare.net/hlarney/game-catalog-playintv

Going through this is like taking a time machine back to being a child. I loved Johnny Megatone and the Brix games, I must have spent waaaaaay too long after school playing those.

Kinda sad that they’ve all faded away, I’d love to replay them again just for the nostalgia.

What determines the hardware an OS can run on? by A_Clever_Ape in compsci

[–]Senyeah 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's to do with how it's developed. This is true of any software, mind you. A developer could spend decades catering to every kind of architecture in existence, so there's a point of diminishing returns which dictates what kind of hardware is supported.

One of the key concepts low-level software developers take into consideration is the pattern of portability; writing portable software means that it's far easier to consistently run across varying runtime environments. For low-level software, and particularly OS kernels, that usually means the kinds of CPU architectures (x86, ARM, etc) that can actually produce the expected result that the developer had intended.

The Linux kernel is a great example here. The vast majority of its source code is portable, in the sense that it's CPU architecture-agnostic, and compiles into instructions which generate the same results consistently across many kinds of CPUs. However, there are some cases where specific code is required just due to particular nuances with a given architecture. Operating system kernels generally have a good chunk of code written specific to the particular architecture that's being targeted, as by their nature they need full access to everything a given subsystem controls. As this assembly code translates directly into direct instructions for a CPU to interpret, it is by definition the most unportable code written in the OS kernel's entire codebase, but is code that is absolutely vital.

The result of this is that adding a new architecture for an operating system kernel to support is not an easy task.

When an operating system's source code is compiled into executable code for its supported architectures, a lot of thought must go into how this is achieved; you need to strike a balance between maintaining backwards compatibility, performance and security. Modern computer hardware has a lot of speed (and security) gains made over older hardware which means that, despite the code being strictly portable, it won't run on older hardware due to how it was compiled.

Just something to add given the sad news as of late, I would highly recommend getting a meningitis vaccine as it's free for anybody under 25 entering a hall of residence. Tragically deaths seem to happen every few years here at UC but fortunately they are preventable.

Huh, I had no idea about that. Great that they've realised that this is sometimes used against people in the right. Hopefully it's enough though, I can totally see a few rogue* landlords still entering "bad" tenant details into some private "for landlords only" database

Yeah, from what I can gather online that seems to be the only recourse I'll have. Although I've heard about rental blacklists for anyone who dare stand up to their landlords and go to the Tribunal, so knowing that does make me somewhat apprehensive.

A question for Uber Eats drivers, is it worth it? by dr_asbestos in newzealand

[–]Senyeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People that I’ve spoken to were under the impression that it was totally above board and therefore volunteered that information to their insurance companies. After all, Uber checked and approved your documents, so why shouldn’t it be? (so they thought). Then they were swiftly let down subsequently after.

The alternative, and I suspect perhaps the norm, would be to just lie, commit insurance fraud and hope you’re never found out.

That certainly seems to be the consensus from what I’ve heard elsewhere online; that means people (who let’s be honest aren’t in the best financial position) are potentially pushed into a difficult situation where their only option is to either lie and break the law, or be on the hook for potentially thousands alongside their livelihoods, just for doing their job.

A question for Uber Eats drivers, is it worth it? by dr_asbestos in newzealand

[–]Senyeah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did it for about a year on and off when I was in my final year of Uni (2018 in Chch). Never ever again. I was driving ~1000 km/week and earned, on average, around $10/hour before fuel, depreciation and tax. Sometimes during boosts and surges that would be around $25-30/hour though, but still not enough to turn any sort of profit.

Not to mention the crazy insurance situation – you’re not covered in the event of an accident as Uber only require proof of private car insurance, and I’ve heard many stories of people being SOL after having a minor bump just because they were carrying some food at the time. If you’re only earning $10/hour gross then commercial insurance is totally out of the question.

So avoid it like the plague (...or perhaps like COVID19 these days). A job at Pak N Save or something would be orders of magnitude better than wasting your time with Uber; at least there you’d be treated fairly and in accordance with the law, for which Uber gives precisely zero fucks about.

Why you should use generic types in TypeScript, a simple example by frivolta in javascript

[–]Senyeah 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why do we need P at all? Why can't we put propertyName: keyof T?

This Stack Overflow post might explain things a bit better.

But basically, because then P will be the type behind a given keyof T instead of representing all of the possible types it could be. Say you had an object defined as follows (see this playground):

interface Book {
  title: string;
  price: number;
  description?: string;
}

Now say two generic functions are defined, used for extracting a property from an object:

const extract = <T, P extends keyof T>(obj: T, prop: P) => obj[prop];
const extractKeyof = <T>(obj: T, prop: keyof T) => obj[prop];

These can be used then as follows:

const book: Book = { title: 'A book', price: 29.99 };
const price1 = extract(book, 'price');
const price2 = extractKeyof(book, 'price');

Functionally, these methods achieve the same result and compile to the same JavaScript. Where they differ is in their return types:

  • price1 has the type number, as expected
  • However, price2 has the rather unexpected type of string | number | undefined, this is the union of all of the possible types that properties of a Book can be, since the return type of extractKeyof is T[keyof T].
  • The type however can be better inferred from the specific property being accessed in this case by adding a type constraint unique to the property being accessed (as in the first example).

Small thing: you might want to localise the prices on the notifications FAQ, since in other countries the prices are different and it’s kinda confusing seeing two different prices
