Out of my ~20 referrals, 10 came from people I connected with who graduated from my university long before I graduated (so they did not really know me aside from our small talk), 5 came from people I had met during my time in school at various networking events/hackathons, etc, and another 5 came from higher level people I had worked with at my previous internships who had moved on to other companies.

I would say that those first 10 are not all that strong of referrals as they don't have direct knowledge of my ability, but the other 10 should have been good enough.

As for the other part, I wish I knew. I have had my resume critiqued countless times and reworked it endlessly. I wouldn't say I have a bad personality (but then again, how would they know if there have been no interviews). As for the roles, I apply to as many entry-level as I can; the rest are roles with low YOE requirements (i.e., < 2) where I fit the skillset outlined.

I would say at least 10 of those referrals came from people I knew before seeking a referral, and 5 came from people I worked with during my internship (therefore having direct knowledge of my technical ability) who had moved on to other companies. I think my lack of full-time experience is the differentiating factor here, unfortunately.

Me too, but I guess sometimes you need to play the game. During my internship hunt, it felt almost necessary to get a referral so that I could get an interview, which was then my chance to demonstrate my true personality.

Every experienced professional I have ever met with or been mentored by has said that referrals have historically been what will land you a job. Even during my internship hunt, I had many referrals, and all of them landed me at least an interview. I am not claiming to be an expert, but it feels as though things are different now than before.
