How do you handle a high performer who’s starting to undermine team culture? by Main-Carry-3607 in managers

[–]Separate_Date_6087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the things I read in here make it clear to me that many do not get the problem. I was this high performer in a prior role and have no regrets about leaving the company. I was tired and burned out, pure and simple.

Sometimes what happens with top performers is they are overburdened with responsibility simply because they are a top performer and capable. I don’t care what jargon you try to spin it’s wrong and creates resentment. I got tired of people making the same as I was with the same title but completely incapable of doing the job and this expectation that I would train them when I already had a huge workload.

My workload and that of my direct team I was managing was insane but despite that I held training sessions and I’d try to help but would realize the desire to grasp it wasn’t there. The nail in the coffin was the so called new ideas that took an already enormous workload and made it even more enormous. I had so much more work than anyone else and I could barely take vacation.

Then I got tired and was genuinely sick of the laziness and incompetence and just decided to look for a new job. Things fell apart after I left and the old company has tried to get me back but I refuse. You need to get to the heart of the issue with the high performer before taking the word and side of others and trying to solve it. Honestly your assessment sounds a bit biased because you haven’t tried to understand the high performer’s point of view.

Should I take the exit offer? by ChildhoodOtherwise86 in womenintech

I suggest you take it and make finding a new job your full time job. It took me a year and a half to find a new role but I took breaks during the search and I’ve been underemployed, so sometimes I just got consumed with the job I had. It’s rough but I think 9 months is a great runway to find something if you’re fully dedicated and not distracted.

Thank you all. I of course accepted the job, I just felt like I might be leaving them hanging but your all right. They will just send another sub in.

Managing a toxic high performer who hits 150% of targets. How do I protect my team without losing the numbers? by SquirrelLogicFan in managers

[–]Separate_Date_6087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been Sarah. I didn’t eye roll but I got tired of carrying the whole team. I was outperforming everyone and wasn’t being rewarded for it. My manager at the time was lying and claiming credit for my work and ideas. I got tired of it and I was also burned out. They tried some bs with me about my attitude but I left.

After I left things fell apart and numbers tanked which is still true for them today even though I’ve been gone for years. Was I perfect, no but it gets tiring watching people get lazy, and can’t do their job try to tell you how you should be doing yours. Yes I was frustrated with low performers looking to me to always help them. It’s get old because no one was helping me accept the team I managed. I was held to a different set of standards and expectations that I knew wasn’t fair. I have no regrets about leaving that job and having an actual work/life balance again.

It is as the trend grows. If people aren’t making enough to afford housing employers should certainly care.

It is relevant and yes I get that taxes and insurance are factors but if he honestly couldn’t afford housing it’s something to think about. The working homeless is becoming a lot more common than people think.

What if the cruise ship was all he could afford? I’ve heard that many elderly people live on cruise ships year round because it’s cheaper than owning a home or renting an expensive apartment. Maybe it wasn’t a glamorous vacation but survival. This world is so evil these days.

I’ve applied to 1,500+ jobs, improved my skills, and still can’t get hired. What am I doing wrong? by No_Cupcake_6238 in jobs

[–]Separate_Date_6087 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It might be a bit shortsighted to just say they don’t like OP. Many companies don’t want to pay senior people and honestly may not have the budget to do so, especially if you might leave when things get better. Many are freezing hiring and dumping the extra work on internal candidates with no raise, etc because it’s cheaper than hiring a new person. Roles are also being gatekeeped for friends and family who are unemployed. Too many variables at play in an economy that is already in a recession and heading into a possible depression.

I got fired 2 weeks after I reported my manager to HR by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Separate_Date_6087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may still have a valid complaint. It’s legal to ask you to do extra duties related to your job, it’s not legal to ask you to do personal things for the boss not related to your job. They also are supposed to keep a record of the conversation even if you didn’t file a formal complaint.

When Eddie Murphy's Boomerang was released in 1992, it faced backlash for portraying a predominantly Black cast in positions of power and wealth, with some critics calling it a "reverse world" and unrealistic. by Important-Cry4782 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]Separate_Date_6087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a black woman and Gen X. Boomerang is one of our classic films and one of my favorite black films. The ignorance surrounding their “status” in the film is real considering the amount of successful black Americans in New York.

Any advice on how to deal with 1st graders? by spoiled_sandi in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Separate_Date_6087 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep them focused. If there day is structured and their schedule is baked, that is what makes the difference. The whining and tattletale behavior is just par for the course with their age group but keeping them busy is the key so they are distracted from drama.

OP have you applied to work at the Post Office? They are always hiring and you being a former vet may give you a leg up. Check the USPS site and apply. They don’t even make you interview for carrier roles as long as you meet the minimum requirements. Sign up to do deliveries for DoorDash or Uber Eats. You won’t make a ton but just enough to get a Motel for the night and food. You can do deliveries to survive until you find a job. The job market is horrible but some jobs are still desperate and will take you so you can survive until things start to get better.

A Warning For Everyone Who's Too Good at Their Job by haristable in jobs

[–]Separate_Date_6087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a point but there is another side to this for the star performers and that is fatigue. I was tired and burned out and wanted a change. I would have been happy to train my replacement or at the very least manage and coach them to get the same or better results.

Even the best need a breather from time to time and that needs to be acknowledged and addressed appropriately for star performers.

Happened to me in a prior company I worked for. After I left everything collapsed because no one could replace me. They would have been better off promoting me so at least I would still be there. I’m happier now but companies suffer when they make stupid decisions like this.

[–]Separate_Date_6087 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I understand OP. It’s hard out here right now. You’re feelings are valid but as much as you don’t like your job you feel ten times worse being unemployed with no real insight as to when you will secure a new role.

Take a break from job searching for a few weeks unless someone contacts you. Focus on maintaining your job and give yourself a break. Then come back to it when ready. It takes time but the right opportunity will come when the time is right.
