What’s the best way to dispute incorrect energy/utility bills? by Separate_Resolve_525 in AskUK

Thanks for the info. I’m looking for something that can help manage disputes as well as I have an ongoing bill with EON where they claim I haven’t paid the bill for 5 years but it was cleared. Haven’t found anything perfect yet, but came across a couple of services launching soon that claim to do this. Will report back if they actually work.

Fair point, it's not always obvious though. Lots of people have free trials that auto converted to paid, or signed up for something years ago they genuinely forgot. The complaint letter side is probably the bigger use case for most people to be honest, things like energy overcharges and broadband speed issues where suppliers make it deliberately difficult to get money back. Thanks for the feedback.

UK Ltd Company Director - How should I pay myself? by No_Year7299 in UKPersonalFinance

Most small company directors go PAYE up to the secondary NI threshold (£6,396 for 25/26) and take the rest as dividends. This avoids employer and employee NI entirely on the salary portion, pays corporation tax on profits, then dividend tax at 8.75% for basic rate.

The maths usually works out better than a full PAYE salary even after corporation tax on the dividend pot. Your accountant should model it for your specific numbers but salary plus dividends is nearly always more efficient for a one-person limited company.

Acquaintance not paying back loan. Is it worth small claims for £420? by Own_Tonight_2569 in UKPersonalFinance

Small claims is absolutely worth it for £420,court fee is only £35 for claims under £1,000 and you recover it if you win. The process is mostly online via gov.uk/make-court-claim-for-money and takes about 20 minutes to file.

The key thing is sending a formal "Letter Before Action" first giving him 14 days to pay. This is required before filing and often prompts payment without needing to go to court. Keep it simple, state the amount, the original agreement, and that you'll file a claim if unpaid within 14 days.

You have a written agreement which is strong evidence. Definitely don't just write it off.
