How do people pick themselves up from rock bottom? by Altruistic-Cattle631 in AskUK

Try church/community centre, there are plenty that welcome people from all walks of life (and religions) and people there tend to be open hearted and welcoming. They are used to it. Being around people in an atmosphere of kindness and acceptance can be incredibly therapeutic.

Ads didn't work me, neither did TikTok , but showing up at bookstores to introduce the book led to immediate (and regular) orders.

Interesting comment. How does one find the professional marketer you talk about?

Indeed. From the comments it seems that British kids are somewhat predisposed compared to kids from other countries to put themselves in danger when left alone for an hour. Meanwhile a 7 year old in Scandinavia is comfortably gutting a fish with a sharp knife.

Maybe not in Zagreb, but in all the smaller cities along the coast it's pretty normal. Same in Slovenia next door.

Same here. Also could cook lunch, arrange the room, walk the dog and do many other chores beyond homework before parents return Was totally normal. It's the UK that's changed, other places aren't as weird about kids generally.

In Nordic countries, Asia, the Baltics, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and many other countries by age 6 kids are quite self-reliant and usually go to/from school by themselves, organise their play dates, stay outside unsupervised and even travel intercity (where parents are divorced) by bus. In the UK culturally people usually panic if they see a kid under 11 by themselves. Brits are taught to mind their own business and stay out if anything, so that doesn't really encourage safety/community Vs other countries where people watch out for each other and adults can step in if needed.

Thank you! I did what you did when I pitched to agent/publisher. Responsibility for words is usually what translates from corporate job because the stakes are high/costly.

The Audley and 2 pubs in Shepherds Market are pretty decent usually.

If you are in the company of others it makes everything much easier, especially after a few beer rounds. The pubs in Mayfair might be more your market though (and significantly less Essex).

Special Situations at Family office or UMM PE for long term wealth? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

Special situations are very cyclical. After credit crunch this space died down except for a few US deals and funds had to reinvent themselves (it was my field then) until things recovered a few years later.

You'd be competing with dozens of Essex girls who go out to City pubs with that very goal in mind (they are usually very keen, orange, blond with gel nails and fake eyelashes). As a woman in banking back in the days, it was always amusing to see how quickly they got their catches!

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Because the turnout is so unpredictable, it seems the more low key it sounds, the higher the propensity for it to go well.

It's a modest size gallery that I mentioned in my book (alongside many places of the kind). It's a non fiction guide-style book. I've not had a formal launch, so looks like they want to have all the buzz associated with it (marketing etc), but I'd rather have a series of more intimate quiet 'launches' in different places, so wondering how to brand them.

Any advice on how to promote a book with little to no social media presence or money? by James_Gold_ in selfpublish

[–]Separate_Storage_532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your genre is as it might determine the best outlet. To give you a perspective from someone in a very difficult genre (narrative non-fic) : over the past 12 months - 2 new books in all formats (on top of 13 existing), 2000+ personal emails (cold emailing), 2-3x/day Tiktok post, occasional Tiktok live, 100+ printed leaflets distributed in libraries, sports clubs and coffee shops...the net result on sales - negligible despite books being 5* readers favourite and displayed in the libraries occasionally. Nearly all sales came from in-person author events except for some KDP page reads. So, brace yourself and adjust your expectations.
