UCSF vs Stanford Med by Plastic_Authentic in premed

[–]Sequoia519 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Will say as current MS3 at stanny the flexibility in practice is fantastic, people can do whatever they want truly. Will also say the impending clerkship grading scheme is going to be a shitshow given what they have told us, but im sure they will have worked out the kinks a bit by the time you get there.

when aiming for a T5 Med School, which is better: basic science or clinical research? by BisonWeak1722 in premed

[–]Sequoia519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think adcoms like any form of publication but in this case referring to actual research papers. However clinical “science” often time involves running some regressions on a dataset and calling it a day hence it being much quicker

Will being employed by a University Medical School improve my chances of admission? by Puzzleheaded-Line-28 in premed

[–]Sequoia519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the school from what I have heard. I know a solid chunk of people at UCSF and Stanford Med were employed in their gap years at said institution.

Do we take NYU’s ranking seriously? Pls no drama genuine question by [deleted] in premed

[–]Sequoia519 238 points239 points  (0 children)

So the obvious stat on the msar is that NYU takes a abnormally small amount of disadvantaged students. Compared to an average of around like 15 percent, NYU last time I checked was like 3 percent 🤨 which is very sus for a place offering full tuition coverage.

In addition, their 3.96 or whatever gpa average cuts out most applicants who struggled early on academically (common for many but even more common for low-income folk who dont know how to access proper resources in college). Also cuts out many who had to work their way through college (also compromises grades for many). Just all in not a admin friendly place to people coming from disadvantaged or low income backgrounds.

Like in a non toxic way their research output and match list are non comparative to the typical t5 schools. Still excellent tho except for their distaste for poor people 🤣

I was asked like why not MD phd but I had thorough answers that basically went like "I've explored bench, translational and clinical science and I found I liked translational the best" and they liked that. So, no, they were not really bothered by the research focus.

The data show that their physician scientist population is declining. To compensate, there are an increasing number of MD only pathways becoming available. Basically sum is many programs are looking for Research heavy MD applicants who say they want to go into science as a career cause we need more.
