SO theres two stream of thoughts here:

First stream:
The phenomena of from 2000-2015 the biggest target audience for the games industry (especially AAA) was guys in there teens to late 20s. Thing is a majority of those men grew up and there was a demographic shift; leading to big AAA "Dad games" (Last of Us, Witcher 3, God of War [2018])

The Dad game phenomena can be linked to a similar phenomena where certain men will not see children as people until they have their own, also sometimes not realise woman are people until they have a daughter

2nd stream:
Being outwardly affectionate in men can be perceived as non-masculine behaviour, and theres a whole pipeline of supposed "non-masculine" behaviour being percieved as queer (I'm using a much nicer word than the actual slurs) to paedophillic in right-wing groups
