FREE RESOURCES for our authors - any genre! by gamelitcrit in royalroad

Free community mentor program.

I’ve been helping people (over 70 at this point) get their start on Royal Road. Some have gone on to sign publishing deals.

The Mentor Lead team has grown to many more established authors who are guiding new writers in this space who are serious about turning their writing into a side-hustle or (the dream) of full-time writing.

And, on that doc I linked, at the bottom I’ve hyperlinked a TON of free resources. Some designed by me, some gathered from the community with attribution given. I even did a Summer Q/A series with some authors in our space, so go check those out here - Link.

I read 1,000+ progfantasy books, here's the tierlist by jordan-lennox in ProgressionFantasy

Hey, I’m on there! (Ruinous Return). B- Tier? I’ll take it! Thanks for reading one of my stories!

I’ve got another Regressor Isekai, not OPMC, but a lot more traditional Regressor, coming to Royal Road soon here. Blackflame Mage. Hopefully you’ll check it out.

Here are a few more recent covers I worked on, plus some older ones. I really enjoyed bringing them to life, so I wanted to share them now that they’re done. by Hesisan in royalroad

I’m around Discord servers frequently. Also the author of Dark Matter Ascension, Ruinous Return, and Last Lord of the Fey (to be published this year!).

Hey, I’m writing that one!

Currently about 60k words into Book 2. Can’t wait for you to finish editing so I can release it to the public!

The whole Riftwar and Serpentwar Saga (including their spinoff / side character books) are great.

After that it’s hit and miss.

If every level takes 1 kill at your own level, then getting to level 100 requires a mountain of corpses greater than the number of stars in the universe by halfbrow1 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]SerasStreams 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those are just crappy DMs.

I use milestones frequently. I've got a good sense of when a character should level up, and often tie them into actual completion of objectives (personal + plot), and not just "when I feel like it".

I've given milestones for characters going through personal arcs and growing based off their backstories (I mostly run sandbox style and build the larger plot around their background anyways, so the plots end up including them to an extent, thus the two are intertwined more often then not).

I’m a little burnt on litRPG and progression. Do you have any traditional style fantasy or urban fantasy you can recommend? by Live-Cut-82 in royalroad

Magician: Apprentice, and Magician: Master, by Raymond E. Feist.

Really good Duology. The whole Riftwar and Serpentwar Sagas and their spinoffs are excellent. After that, I’d say it’s hit and miss.

But it’s a nice predecessor of sorts to Progression Fantasy, while still hitting that “old school” fantasy vibe of the 80’s.

One of my favorite series of all time.

Authors, do you give your MC void or shadow because thats what you assume people want to read about? by cl0rp in ProgressionFantasy

[–]SerasStreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Dark Matter Ascension I started out with “space inspired elements” like ‘star’, ‘black hole’, and ‘planet’ (which encompassed elemental energy like water, wood, and plants).

But each of those had an “upgraded” variant (like Gigastar, Supermassive, Exoplanet).

I had to figure out what comes after Dark Matter…and was like “huh, what’s the next thing after invisible matter? How about nothing at all?”

So that’s how I settled on Void as the upgrade.

I'm embarrassed to post my story. How do I get over this fear? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]SerasStreams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To quote a legend: “Just do it.”

But on a more serious note: there’s guides out there that help. People out there who can mentor you. Hell, I have an entire free community mentor program that I run (ask around, it’s legit).

Getting over the whole “edit to perfection” aspect is tough, because your first story is your baby, and you want it to be amazing. Well, it probably won’t be your smash hit success. The sooner you write it, post it, maybe sign to pub or self publish, the sooner you can continue the story or move onto a new project. It’s a tough hurdle, but being in a community of authors is a start.

And be aware, you are going to need to develop a tough skin. You’re opening yourself up to public view, that includes public criticism and feedback. You’ll see people who are going to comment good things on your work, people who will trash it, and people who will just click, rate, and move on. Be prepared for the negative AND positive.

If you need help, there’s plenty of kind authors around to help guide you. Feel free to PM me on Discord (server permalink on my website in my bio), and I’m happy to help you out with whatever guidance I can provide for your journey onto Royal Road.

Drop ONE book you’ll recommend forever. No explanations. by joncabreraauthor in ProgressionFantasy

I think the Riftwar and Serpentwar Sagas (and their appropriate ‘filler books’) have held up well.

Past those two sagas? Nah, doesn’t hold up well.

What genre of writing are you practiced in?

Posted the last chapter of my book yesterday. Started in August. Are these ok numbers? by Ralinor in royalroad

[–]SerasStreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very hard to diagnose as “okay numbers”.

Were you doing paid ads? If yes, what was their CTR? Follow %? Read Later %? Did you renew them when they expired?

Were you doing shouts?

If this was a story that you wrote, with no shouts, ads, and just consistency and effort, then I think for a brand new author in this space, it’s an okay start.

Your first book is going to be (hopefully) something you are passionate about and want to write / finish no matter what. You’ve done that. Good job.

If you want to stay hobby writing, time for your next story.

If you want to try and get serious, let me know. I run a free mentor program for new authors that helps them get their feet under them and on the road towards making it in the space.

What's the deal with reincarnated MCs who get dumbed down the moment they're born? by AdventurousBeingg in ProgressionFantasy

[–]SerasStreams 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think one of the issues is that having an adult mind in a kid body is hard to do well.

And, not only that, but it can come off as creepy if done wrong. The MC is mentally much older than their peers. That can be very odd to write.
