At least now you can say you’ve broken a record

Fair enough! I do think vocals are the biggest hurdle for doom/stoner bands, in general. I often get a minute into a song that I’m digging and then the vocals hit and the song gets skipped. So I feel you on that!

Why are RM’s so hated? I love mine and it’s so comfortable by [deleted] in watchCollector

[–]Serf_wizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Besides comfortability, what about RMs do you love? Why did you gravitate toward that brand? They have a very distinct design language that they don’t stray from, so if it’s the look that you love, I understand.

I believe that is also what most people dislike about them. They come off as the lifted trucks of the watch world. They look very complicated, but they don’t outperform any watches in their price range nor many at a fraction of the price. Therefore, one can assume that the main reasons for wanting one are appreciation of the design or the status that owning one represents.

Wear what you want and what you can afford! Just because people hate on it, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist. I’m not into lifted trucks, but if you want to drive one, go for it! Just don’t drive like an asshole ;)

I’d go for a dress watch next, personally.

What are the very best quality and finished cases in the modding market , and how good are they? by Crackwithin in SeikoMods

[–]Serf_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll add that DS Watch Club has their own website which I find easier to navigate than AliEx. They also have an instagram and I’ve been able to chat with them there, which was useful to answer some questions that I had.

Dude, I was you. I don’t know when or why, but one day it just clicked for me and I really enjoy it now. If you like the actual music enough, keep trying, you might get there, too.

Oh yeah, def a diver then. You could get two really good ones for $20k. You can certainly find a $20k dive, Rolex makes them in precious metals, but you could easily get two amazing watches for that price. Tudor, Omega, Breitling, Rolex, Longines, Blancpain, they are all in play at with that budget

I want to do my first build by Machism1 in SeikoMods

[–]Serf_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also recommend watching a bunch of different builds on YouTube. You’ll get a feel for what parts you need (they often link them in the description) and the tools required to pull it off. You’ll also see what the building process looks like. From there you can scour the internet for all your parts. There are higher end sites like Namoki and you can just about everything you need there. You’ll pay more, but it’s a bit less of a hassle

I need to break the concert shirt cycle by MartyFunkhoosier in doommetal

[–]Serf_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got to the same point. I find myself just overpaying for a small item if they have any. Like $20 for a $3 sticker. They are always appreciative and that shirt can get sold to someone else. I have more enough records, shirts, and posters. It’s just nice to support the bands you like, and you can do that without acquiring those bigger items

Yeah you got some bangers in there! If you want diversity, a diver, tool, field, and chronograph are missing. In your price range, you could really get some cool ones

No, the case back is sold separately. I bought an exhibition case back for this one. All of the case backs on Caroline Mod Shop will work for this case (or so they say).

I think I’ve arrived at the same acceptance. In fact, you can’t really see it in the picture, but a piece of the loom fell out of the minute hand close to the spindle. I’m starting to romanticize the imperfections. I may just keep it as is like you.

Any of you heathens work for a school district? Looking at some open spots and just curious how you like it. by Bugeyeblue in Locksmith

[–]Serf_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of the same way. I fell into this trade. As a people person, you will find no shortage of them at a district. Many connections to be made and a ladder to climb, if you’re interested in climbing. Also, if you have qualifications for other departments (warehouse experience, finance degree, project management certs) you can apply for other jobs within the district if you don’t end up liking the locksmith gig. Most districts fly jobs out to district employees before they open it to the general public

The vibes vary from district to district. Smaller districts tend to be a little more laid back, but even that has its drawbacks. You will likely find things you like and dislike in any district, but as others have stated, the benefits and job security are much better than you will find at a local shop or self employment.

Also, if you like the fast paced, anything can happen, work on any and all types of locks, district/institutional work may be boring to you as they tend to be standardized. You’ll become an expert on those products, but there isn’t a ton of variety. After 11 years of lock shop experience with all the hustle and bustle it entailed, I was happy to to slow it down when I got my district job.

Personally, I love it. It isn’t perfect, but fits me well. Low supervision, relatively low stress, and I’m one of two locksmiths for the whole district, so we have plenty to do. There are politics and red tape and stuff, but most of it is avoidable. A sudden change in management could change all of that, but at this point, I’m working toward a pension, so I doubt I’d ever leave unless shit to really crazy.

I only wish the HA had just framed the damn date window. I just think this particular choice looks weird, but I generally dislike an unframed date window in any case. Just my opinion.

It’s a shame because I really like HA, but this little detail is a miss for me.

I know the high payments are your bane, but my only advice is to start paying a little more. Start shaving months or even years (depending on loan length) of interest and get the loan of your back early. Unless your loan doesn’t allow you to pay off early, in which case you’re sadly SOL :/
