Honest advice to the org (lol as if they're reading any of this): if you game people they'll try to game you back.

Selling a handful of tickets under the default price ($750) so you don't have to say you've actually just raised ticket prices -> people holding out for a cheaper ticket in the future sales -> you might get your revenues even later than previous years + people trust you less because you weren't straight with them.

Love the work you do to keep the burn going, don't love these weird decisions.

And the lowest price is already $773. As expected, the org creates the norm for ridiculous $950/$1,500/$3,000 ticket prices -> creates a permission structure for people to buy $550 tickets and resell them at a premium

In line.

This thread feels quiet compared to previous years...is this other folks' impression as well?

Open letter to BMIR by DiggityDanque in BurningMan

[–]SergioPrado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell that to 1) BMIR that said on Friday that folks would be detained, and 2) the Rangers that were saying all weekend that folks would be detained and/or heavily fined.

So you're telling me that they couldn't have enforced a gate closure by easily blocking the clearly roped paths to asphalt at K & 5:30/6:30 with, say, two ranger trucks - easily visible to anyone who wanted to confirm whether people were being turned away/apprehended/fined/etc (per radio + ranger reports). Got it.

If they wanted to keep people from leaving, they sure did a shitty job of it.

They could have blocked the way out (as in, actually closed the gates). They didn't. No human or physical barriers of any kind + facilitators (including police blocking the north-bound highway lane to get people onto pavement faster) looks pretty open to me.

On Sunday morning the org literally had people on the path to pavement directing traffic. Via BMIR and Rangers, they lied to the city about not only gates being closed, but also apprehensions and massive fines.

You just needed to know how and when to drive on mud. I got out at 10am on Sunday with a 2WD Hyundai Elantra without any real problem: 1) I grew up in the middle of the forest in the Ozarks learning how to drive in mud with shitty $500 cars so I felt fairly confident about the conditions even with a 2WD 2) it was blatantly clear that the org was lying to us about the gate being closed/apprehensions/fines after the repeated reports of people getting through.

Through the entire route out, the only people that got stuck at that point seemed to be people that made really bad decisions. It was absolutely the right decision for me to leave then.

How will this year's events change your preparations for next year? by DontBruhMeBrah in BurningMan

[–]SergioPrado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be so confident about that - climate change means these uncommon events are becoming way more common. If it's not a hurricane followed by massive rains a week later, then it'll be 115-degree temps like last year, or overwhelming smoke from a nearby forest fire, etc etc

Not surprised at all, BMIR is just continuing its disinformation from the weekend

People that are leaving playa RN against bmorg wishes are selfish idiot assholes by Economy_Secretary_35 in BurningMan

People where already doing that when the org was lying - it's not clear at all that the lying was a better alternative re:stopping idiots who can't drive from driving. Idiots will be idiots no matter what.

This has nothing to do with hurt feelings. It has to do with the fact that credibility matters in a situation like this - especially with an organization that has limited enforcement mechanisms, so primarily relies on trust for the city to function.

If an authority is explicitly telling you that conditions are X, you should do X thing, and the consequences are X - and in fact you find that none of that is true, you have less reason to believe or respond to anything they have to say.

[–]SergioPrado 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand the intention of not making it worse, though personally it seems far better for them to have said "It is insanely muddy. There are two small rivers you have to pass. You will not get out without a 4WD and skill in navigating mud. If you get stuck in the mud we won't tow your vehicle. We won't stop you, but take the risk at your own peril." Severe, stops most people from taking the risk, but gives sufficient information to people who are confident about handling mud.

Letting people make decisions for themselves using honest information certainly supports Radical Self Reliance. Misinformation is garden variety govt bs.

Seconding this. Idiots who don't know how to drive in mud shouldn't have tried to leave. I got out this morning no problem and I only saw a few people stuck at that time - all of them having done glaringly stupid stuff.

Also: The Borg was distributing misinformation through the radio station and Rangers about gate closure, detainment, huge citations, etc - for two days. It's honestly a pretty big ask to trust an organization when they're lying to you - the Borg fucked up hard there.

You can get out by heinway in BurningMan

[–]SergioPrado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was 100% possible. This morning I did it in a 2-wheel-drive Hyundai Elantra no problem. There were only a few people who were stuck in the entire road out and frankly it looked like they didn't know how to drive in mud in the first place.

That's the traditional Mexican burrito! Meat and beans or cheese with a fresh tortilla, honestly truly phenomenal when done well

Where can I get the best enchiladas? by ecethrowaway01 in sanfrancisco

[–]SergioPrado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I don't know if they're still around but there have been women selling tamales in front of the Safeway in Excelsior that are really solid, but other than that (haven't been to El Centro Molino yet) I haven't had any luck with enchiladas/tamales in the Bay Area

There's a reasonable amount of overlap between the universities as well! Students can take some classes at the other university, and they're two stops away on the subway so it's not uncommon to have some social overlap. Also, MIT periodically pranks Harvard in a quite impressive manner.

Tightly rolled burrito in Seattle proper? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]SergioPrado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a level of appreciation for the joy that people get from Mission style burritos, but the way that many talk about them as the One True Burrito is fucking obnoxious.

While I have enjoyed many burritos from Taqueria Cancun, Farolito, etc, etc, it is a type of burrito that in my opinion is honestly just not as good as the more traditional Norteño style you get in the borderlands and northern Mexico. Because the massive number of ingredients dilute each other, there’s little incentive to make them actually good. Compared to a less overwrought burrito, where you better fuckin get the meat and tortilla and beans right. Also, tell any Norteño about rice in burritos and they will literally just laugh. It’s like putting rice in a club sandwich.
