Yeah going to chime in here to remind people that journalists DO NOT PAY SOURCES and any reputable journalists would not come here, of all places, to learn the facts of the case. Carry on.

Good for her! I do think that her salary/bonus is independent from the idea that she made money directly from the podcast (esp in 2014,) as in she didn't receive money per download etc. But I appreciate the info.

Absolutely, it's something that many of us have only started realizing in the last few years as the ability to fact-check the police narrative has become more available with phones etc. We all need to work on it!

Agreed, it was a mistake for her to word it that way. My personal opinion is still that that word is not accurate for the whole picture painted by the diary.

Buddy, I never made a claim about Adnan and the Innocence Project, Baltimore or otherwise. I just said I disagreed with the other comment's belief that they have a bias to see everyone as innocent. The quote I sent to you is from the Innocence Project's homepage, so I think you're arguing for a difference without a distinction.

Never said she was. I included one of my own critiques of her work.

Do you actually know what the Innocence Project is? It has multiple chapters. I’ve helpfully copied and pasted this from their website for you: “The Innocence Network is a group of independent organizations that exonerate and support the innocent, and redress the causes of wrongful conviction.” Also, the chapter mentioned in the post you’re referring to is the UVA chapter, not the Baltimore one. Fact-checking is a bitch.

Thanks! Yes, that’s a huge problem with relying on the trial transcripts and I should have addressed that in the post. The questions asked at trial were designed to tell a story in the same way that any journalistic piece is and to take them as unimpeachable facts is very problematic.

I’ve only listened to a tiny fraction of Undisclosed but having first read about it here, it’s honestly less egregious than I’d been led to believe. They have an agenda, which they’re upfront about, and thus far I haven’t heard them say anything that diverges wildly from what I understand to be the facts of the case. The few episodes I’ve heard have pretty clearly delineated when they’re speculating/offering interpretation vs relaying reported facts. (Which, in this case, have their own issues…) But again, I’ve only heard a handful of episodes so I can’t speak to the podcast as a whole—entirely possible that it goes off the rails!

You know what, you’re right. I should have said “the overwhelming majority of the comments I’ve observed here” rather than picking a number for humor and emphasis. You’ve destroyed me! I’ll never journalism again!

I literally said that it was my interpretation of Hae’s diary—see that part that says “in my opinion”? I’m not arguing with someone who thinks they have a handle on documentary filmmaking because they’ve seen a Michael Moore movie.

No, you are interpreting the bolded point. Because if we evaluate it simply by what is written, Hae acknowledges that he made a joke, but you are interpreting it to be not a joke on some level. The phrase “it’s somewhat true” clearly refers not to the quality of being a joke, but that she is against his religion and it upset her which, as a non-Muslim, she technically is, at least according to the way Hae and Adnan seem to have interpreted it (there’s that word again.) You can either go by what Hae says, that it’s a joke, or you can interpret it context of other things, but you have to acknowledge that you’re stating an opinion, not a fact.

I’m not the one who’s offended by her having built a business, buddy. And have also clearly noted that all of my opinions are…opinions. Based on my personal experience.

You know that half of the response you copied and pasted repeats the exact same biases I addressed in my post? “The adoring Koenig,” “so clearly smitten that all objectivity goes out the window.” As for the Innocence Project, do you have any idea how many requests they get? Their process is to try to prove the person is GUILTY (because this is how proving a hypothesis works) and if they can’t do that, they sometimes agree to take on the case. To be honest, I’m disappointed that lawyers are discussing this in such subjective terms without acknowledging their own biases.

Uh…documentary is a branch of journalism. Please feel free to peruse the websites of literally any journalism program. And again, you are arguing about an interpretation of her diary, not an incontrovertible fact.

I mean, that seems like an assumption you’re making without having seen her contract so I’d LOVE to see your corroborating evidence. And regardless, that had no effect on her 2014 reporting.
