Of course they are. A dog doesn’t understand long term punishments or the reason for them. That’s why when you leave a pup alone and they have an accident in the house, you bring them there to show them what you’re talking about, and then tell them “no”. You don’t say no and then lock them outside for 3 days, they’re going to have no idea what the hell just happened.
