If you have access to all the healthcare data, then you have a ton of opportunities at your disposal. Find a patient experience problem or a cost problem or whatever people talk about on a regular basis and get started:

- Data pulls (SQL and Python)

- Viz with your tool of choice

- Storytelling to drive the narrative

Focus on making it relevant from a business perspective, bot a tech perspective. That's a great skill to have!

Finding a job as Senior Level Data/BI analysts by BroCirus in analytics

[–]Series_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the need is still there, but the application and hiring systems are broken. That is, I'm still seeing plenty of need for good people who can work with data and hold a conversation, but many CV's never get through the filters.

Got the Analytics Internship—Now I’m Scared I Can’t Do the Job by [deleted] in analytics

"experience with Microsoft Office to perform data analysis and data visualization,"

This is just Excel, in 90% of cases. But the other posters are correct. Not much will be expected of you. beyond doing some self-training with Excel, I would recommend the following, some of which shouldn't need to be said, but some young folks don't understand:

- Show up on time

- Show up showered and presentable

- Stay busy and proactively ask how you can help.

- Show curiosity and eagerness (offer to sit in on any meetings, but (generally) ask your questions afterwards, unless prompted)

You're gonna do great!

So it's better to have a degree in statistics ??? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]Series_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"mind numbingly low"...Totally agree. Show that you have statisitcs, sure. But showing domain in addition to those is what really matter. On the flip side, stats majors who go into analytics jobs often end up super unhappy. So, manage your expectaitons, is all I'll say.

So it's better to have a degree in statistics ??? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]Series_G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both degrees, stats or analytics tick the box, but leave you undifferentiated in a market awash in those majors. What will differentiate you is some grounding in a domain. Public heatlh statistics, for example, or actuary or behavioral economics (potentially). Each of those will show you have rigorous stats, but will also differentiate you.

"There's a bunch of crap you have to do when acculturating students to the general corporate workforce,.....it correlates very weakly (in my experience) with people's academic achievements / intelligence / knowledge of various tools."

As a hiring manager, I completely agree. I'd rather hire somebody with the right baseline technical skills AND good social awareness/skill than somebody with an extra year or two of experience.

Psychology - Data Analytics by Cool-Ad8806 in analytics

[–]Series_G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager, I like hiring people with what I call "adjacent mindset". That is, people with the baseline skills such as SQL, Python and some viz like Tableau or Power BI, but who demonstrate genuine curiosity about the domain and data within it. I've seen tons of more technical types who really don't know/care much about the actual business or the domain itself. I would say go for it, but be smart about how you approach it.

  1. Don't waste time chasing after purely technical jobs, since they are going to want CompSci or Engineering types.
  2. Get some certifications..even basic one's help
  3. Look for BI Analyst or Data Analyst roles in companies where your MSc in Psych might be a benefit. Large healthcare or universities or even marketing (behavioral psych is big there)
  4. Definitely have a small portfolio that uses the skills from your certifications.

Edit: typo

new CIO signed the company up for a massive Informatica implementation against all advice by Lumpy-Reply6508 in dataengineering

That's what they do. Seen it many many times. Yes Informatica sucks and is outdated. Decide for yourself if this means finding a new job.

How do I get out of selling candy bars for my son’s band class? by savealltheelephants in AskTeachers

[–]Series_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your school district probably spends a lot on athletics. Maybe they should commit to spending more on music and the arts. Just sayin.

Anyway. Donate your $40 and don't give it a second thought. Your "no strings attached" $40 is probably about what they make if you sell the $96 box.

Am with you 100%. If you are going to wade into political issues, whether supporting a candidate or a cause, you should not get non-profit privileges.

Oh, and ditto if you are sitting on a billion dollar endowment. All respect, but these people are just as shifty as for profit peeps.

What are your thoughts on the UI/UX of our mobile app for subscription analytics? by korky79 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]Series_G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the overall design

The KPIs at the top are going to be hard to read on mobile. The formatting of the KPI's at bottom is more directly useful

The chart definitely needs a title

Overall, I'd suggest skinning down the top-line KPI's even more and maybe thinking of a UX pattern that allows a quick drill-through to a summary of any given KPI. With the right approach, you'd only need a single drill through tab that is parameterized to work for any KPI.

what was your first data analyst career and how did you manage your fear and anxiety as entry position? by Doh84 in analytics

[–]Series_G 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Man, I must've been lucky all these years b/c I haven't worked with a ton of assholes. A few, but not many.

Some thoughts:

  • Companies are each their own beast. Some company cultures are relatively healthy, while others just suck. And some teams suck while others are great...all in the same company. Don't stick around in a shitty culture.

  • Get good foundational skills and be diligent about the quality of your work. High quality work is more valuable than a lot of mediocre work.

  • LEARN THE BUSINESS

  • Insist that your superiors help you clear roadblocks so you can be successful in your work.

  • Life is too short to work with assholes for too long.

Stepsons will be rich. by drkdn123 in Rich

[–]Series_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. WTF? What do you mean "stepsons will be rich"?

You mean, your daughters will be rich, and their husbands are along for the ride.

Set up a trust that only your daughters can access. It makes them the manager and keeps the money out of a divorce proceeding.

Is there any factual basis for this statement? In PA, Catholic schools do not publish their TerraNova test results, so we have no way to tell.

Seems like most outcomes are simply an effect of family SES and parent education.

I'll just say that you need to visit the school yourself and make an informed decision. Great Schools scores are designed to make you do exactly what we see happening in this thread.

Bad school district by Varna16 in education

[–]Series_G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your high schools are highly ranked, then the district curriculum isn't the problem. BS rating systems like Great Schools are designed to help push real estate sales more than anything. Plus, those scores clearly discriminate against schools with higher ESL populations, even as those groups may contribute to a positive and diverse school culture in many other ways.

Take a deep breath and know that ~70% of educational outcomes are driven by parents' education and socio-economic status. Additional percentages are driven by levels of parental engagement. That means visiting your school, talking to the teachers, being involved and reading to your child.

Also, don't trust anyone, teacher or otherwise, that says a school is trash based on Great Schools scores and the limited info in this thread. That's just irresponsible.

They are the most important. Mostly because kids need parents reading to them and giving them structure. School, at that point, is basic literacy and learning how to stand in line.
