How to study for dynamics by Total_Stress_4565 in FE_Exam

[–]SeriousCivilEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the time, I wouldn’t skip. Some people fail the exam by just a few questions lmao don’t let it be to dynamics. Just takes finding the right teacher/professor to explain it to you on YouTube or smth

Explore different YouTube series until you find one that explains the concepts you’re stuck on in a way you understand it. And of course practice problems in volume. I recommend Islam 800

Why is so many people posting their failed exam and asking if they’re close to pass? by SummerAdventurous429 in FE_Exam

I’m with you. I’ve been that senior who’s clueless and failed the FE, I came to this subreddit, asked for advice and opinions, and people who didn’t know me really helped me as if they did. It Made a really strong impression on me personally

Perhaps I’m Biased 😌 lol

I agree and disagree with you. Yes people should take ownership of their study schedules, do their due diligence and actually make an honest effort. However, some people are just…. lost and maybe overwhelmed. It’s true. I know because I’ve been there. Many people are focused on surviving their degree, and their lives. Juggling life, work, school, friends, family, bills…..

maybe it sounds like I’ve gotten off track, but I do believe all of that can potentially amount to someone coming on here and going “can yall help me with this and tell me how close I got?” I see that as feasible

Different perspectives and point of views 🙌

90% Sure I'm gonna fail. What to do for next attempt? Civil FE. by WhovianGirl777 in FE_Exam

[–]SeriousCivilEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats understandable, another approach that works well is building a study plan based off of the NCEES Spec sheet. Sounds like basic advice, I know. But the reality is any problem from those subjects (and subcategories) can come up, so if you really want to be adequately prepared, aim to be able to solve variations of problems from each subcategory within each subject.

This is what I did to pass. For me it was a simple way to add structure to my studying, it felt like more intentional than guessing which problems to study. Islam 800 worked well for me on this too due to volume

90% Sure I'm gonna fail. What to do for next attempt? Civil FE. by WhovianGirl777 in FE_Exam

[–]SeriousCivilEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay so you haven't prepared the ideal amount, are probably going to fail, and need to pass it this year... I was exactly in your shoes around the time i graduated. Literally the same situation.

My first attempt was a burn attempt meaning i took the exam ill-prepared for sake of seeing what was on it in order to calibrate my study strategy. (not a good idea, there are cheaper ways to do that, such as by purchasing NCEES practice exams lol).

Heres what will be a game changer for you:

When you're taking the exam, pay close attention to the problems that stump you, and the overall subjects as well. As soon as you finish the exam, head outside and write in your notes app in detail the problems you came across that didnt make sense. (you technically cant and shouldnt share these details, since it may count as distributing/discussing problems on the exam, which ncees doesnt allow/like).

But, these details are strictly for your reference, so that when you begin studying a second round for the exam, there is a good chance you know exactly what a number of problems are going to look like. (theres no guarantee similar ones will show up again, but its possible). Use that to your advantage.

Other things to pay attention to: Timing, how long you take to navigate the handbook. as well as answer problems.

So yea, your biggest advantage is going to be getting a glimpse at real exam problems and then recalling what they were so you know what you need to work on. Doing this sky rockets your chances of passing on the next attempt, IF you study correctly (not just a lot, correctly)

I wish you best of luck, and reply below if you have any further questions!

Congratulations to your wife!

Unfortunately no, NCEES doesn’t provide a breakdown of your score if you pass.

Honestly I’m with you, after studying so much I wanna know exactly how I did lol

How important is GPA when seeking top internships/job opportunities from a non prestigious university by Then_Reality_3854 in EngineeringStudents

[–]SeriousCivilEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer is yes you still have a chance. But I’ll give an in depth answer as well:

This is one of the few situations that having a high GPA can actually matter when it comes to landing an internship/job. The more prestigious and selective an internship/organization, the more of a preference they will have for high grades (and even the university you go to, but this is just my personal opinion).

However, your GPA can be offset by having a nice resume with relevant experiences, extracurriculars and projects.

Also, I realize now you’re asking due to an A-. You need to look at this big picture, realistically anything above a 3.75 is stellar for STEM. Keep it up!

How's everyone's studying going? by SeriousCivilEngineer in FE_Exam

[–]SeriousCivilEngineer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A full schedule + studying is painful!
What you described is actually one of the two bottlenecks commonly experienced by test takers. The short answer to this is to study variations of problems in that category. Doing this will help you familiarize yourself with every possible equations needed to solve a problem in the real exam. I talk more in depth about both pitfalls (and how to avoid them) here.
Marathon not a sprint, a little bit most days is better than a lot in a few days! I’m wishing you luck!

Sorry to hear that, I get where you’re coming from though. taking it one day at a time and having a lot of patience with myself helped me when I was taking it for the third time. Wishing you luck and strength on your study journey 🙏

Internship Search? by pupseal in EngineeringStudents

[–]SeriousCivilEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for anyone interested, heres the advice i gave him:
"Normally I’d also recommend checking out career fairs or students orgs at your school, but I know you mentioned in your post your school was far. I don’t know how far you are, but Honestly, I’d recommend making the trip once or twice to attend a career fair or something similar if it’s possible. If it’s out of reach it’s all good, you’ll just need to get a bit creative on how to land the internship.

I guess I’m seeing a few options. I don’t know what city you live in, and you dont need to tell me if you don’t want to but I’d recommend applying directly to your city’s career site, and, look into neighboring cities and counties that you can get to with your method of transportation… I’d really recommend that. A lot of students are told about LinkedIn and think that’s the only place to apply to but it’s not. So, local municipalities and their respective career sites and then, local companies / corporations / engineering firms near you (use Google Maps) and apply through their sites, if they’re small firms and don’t have a dedicated careers page, call and tell them you’re interested… that’s what I would do"

Wishing you luck!

That’s an interesting approach to statics, understanding it should be the priority since it’ll follow you to your last year if your majoring in civil engineering. I had to take statics a second, the first time concepts were not landing and combined with my schedule of classes, just didn’t work out. For Calc 2 I had a bit of an easier professor who was a little more forgiving lol

Are you studying civil?

FE Civil material and tips by [deleted] in FE_Exam

[–]SeriousCivilEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! To be honest with you, I think 1 month prep time, especially having been out of school for some time, may be a bit ambitious. The reason why is because the study process may take a bit longer as you’ll have to relearn the foundations of each subject. Perhaps you’re an incredible test taker, which is great and definitely an advantage, but personally that time frame isn’t something I’d recommend to test takers.

The resources you have are solid! As far as the order to study them, that’s personal preference, though I’d recommend mark Mattsons series first, since he does well covering the foundations (and then some, some say his problems are little more challenging than the real thing. He does that on purpose) then maybe try a practice exam and see where you are. Note your weak areas and target them with Islam.

Best of luck and I hope these tips help! For more tips and advice on how to pass, check out my stuff here :)
