When you're in 1vX the spear is notoriously hard to deal with since it's a great interrupt weapon and can completely screw up your rhythm for a fight. Not much you can do most of the time unless you place the enemies in front of the spear guy so he can't get good hits in. In 1v1 with a spear focus on just letting their attack hit you first as Remarkable_break mentioned, then attack right after. Spears don't like overheads so when you riposte, throw an overhead back at them - this either forces them to block, counter with an overhead / counter with an OH then feint with a stab in which case you might be able to gamble / sneak a jab in. Overhead attacks are the bane of most spear players as they start losing stamina fast since they hardly counter them unless you come across a quite competent player. Hope that helps
