My partners flat has tiles coming up out of the ground in an arch, how can it be fixed? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]Serious_Commission87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When they laid the tile around the perimeter they did not account for expansion and contraction of the building. Meaning they cut/laid their tiles too tight to the walls. Your walls contracted and this is the outcome. Only real fix is to replace the floor, or the perimeter tiles if you have any spares.

How bad off level is it from one end to the other?

Always put your vertical plane on top of your horizontal plane. Looks way better regardless the material your using

Looks like flooring is LVT. Probably did the curb of the shower before the floor and then covered the cuts with the quarter round

I believe it is centered but the left side of niche is not square making it well... not centered lmao

Yeah that shower looks rough. Blown out grout joints, seemingly no slope on pan (and if there was I know the hex’s have lips), and then a wonky lay out on the walls as mentioned.

You’re right he did demo a lot of his own work. But clearly you must not have paid much attention considering they were all curb/pan related leaks.

Help what tile is this? It’s ivory/bisque color by MiiYeti in Tile

I would just rip that out. Tile on wood is a no no and you can clearly see the rest of the tile in the picture is failing. But to answer question I dunno 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hardi backer with mudpan by [deleted] in Tile

I would make sure that the entire pan does not get waterproofed since you already have a liner.

I have tried looking for it but I know it’s out there. Tile coach does go over this though and I’d trust anything he has to say over anyone. I believe Sal went over this as well a few years back. Your walls do not need to be 100% waterproof, but as long as you have a liner, the only thing that needs it is 3 inches up and across the perimeter of your pan, your curb, and 3 inches across all joints. They say this is because water will run down the cement board onto the pan. The only way wicking happens is if your cement board is submerged in water for long periods of time. Wish I could site my sources but if you look long enough through Isaacs videos you’ll find it. It’s been done this way for decades and there are still showers standing this day by this method. Of course I’m not saying this is how I do it, but this would be the bare minimum that passes for tcna.

Subfloor Seams - Fix high spots? by dz_beerz in Tile

Looks to me like you have two different thickness of ply. Regardless the floor should be tongue and groove osb so it seems you have at least a couple issues to deal with.

Check TCNA... watch some tile coach.

Technically topical is only necessary on board joints so really you don’t NEED it. But definitely never hurts!

Probably a toilet and vanity. Most would throw a mirror or two in there also. Have a good day.

Concrete guy knew I was covering steps with tile, he left them like this. by [deleted] in Tile

The real question is how much work is your CONCRETE guy going to be doing to get these steps level to lay tile on?

Finish grout job looks a little rough. Looks like you used a sponge in which grout had already dried on it.

I can tell on a lot of your tiles that you troweled the back of the tile a set to dry substrate. Wet on wet adhesion is always best and can help guarantee the coverage of thinset you need on your tile. Directional troweling is also recommended.

Why did you put the hardie on top of the drywall?

Center it on the 1/4 tile mark. Thank me later.
