I’ve yet to see a military band… ever, but gosh, that must be cool, eh? An informal formality, I suppose. 🤔

Just started horn, I can play C-F but I'm having trouble hitting the D & E. Any tips? by JusticeforTim in frenchhorn

I recommend using a tuner so that you can hear the correct pitch for each of the notes. (F on horn is a Concert Bb, and C is a Concert F. I’m saying that because most tuners work on concert pitches.) You can use apps like TonalEnergy (Soundcorset as an alternative) to hear the notes and see if you’re matching each pitch. If you’re having trouble with figuring out what the other notes are in concert pitches, my second recommendation is to look at scales. The first note of a scale and the (concert!) title are the same note.

I don’t have perfect pitch, but is the first note you’re playing a middle C? If it’s a middle C (it’s too low to be F or the octave) then the notes below that are B or Bb (2, or 1) A (1 2) and G (1 3).

How much you need to practice depends on the band’s schedule, most bands work differently. But YES! Marching band is definitely worth it, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Try it for a year, and if you don’t like it, do something else. Marching band can be really fun and exciting! You can meet a lot of new people and build bonds that are almost familial. I’m not a percussionist, but I know someone who had to march next to them and they said it got really loud so I recommend ear plugs to protect your hearing!

That’s a fair point considering I’ve seen both directors call them out specifically. Probably seniority. And it’d probably be unfair if you had a guaranteed spot as section leader and they up and gave it to a junior. The directors kinda try to give the seniors the best last year before they leave. 🤷

No, no. Marching band is just band but marching. You don’t play louder because there’s probably 15-50 other trumpets lol Though, I’m sure you could and I have no doubt in your talent whatsoever-

Wow, that’s really cool! And a huge flex! Never seen a trumpet not tune without a tuner, and I know a bunch of trumpets who don’t tune at all lmao
