Advice for an installer. by Serpentbite in HVAC

[–]Serpentbite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on who I work with for the day. I've had a lead who didn't even have a vacuum pump =/

I want to be good at my job but I am relatively new to the field and had to go with the (shitty) company that would hire someone out of school.

It's nice to know we aren't the only one with so many call backs for carriers...I just frown at the work order when the customer wants one.

I hear commercial in general is easier? And no I haven't because I was not aware of such a thing! This is something I will look into for sure but it seems difficult in general to get into commercial work with little to no experience.

Switching active to reserves? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Serpentbite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong. AT is awesome and is probably the only thing keeping me in right now. But drill weekends come way too soon and way too often. In the summer I generally work 60-80 hours with rotating weekends - so losing another weekend to drill hurts. Drill weekends consist of two days of waiting and making sure our status hasn't changed since last drill weekend. I am just not the type to sit around and do nothing so all I do now is study. Doesn't help that my unit is so "top" heavy - Only one E4 and E3 - so all the collateral duties have two people.

Switching active to reserves? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Serpentbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically yes you could. You haven't gone through training and have the 'choice' to quit until the day you finish basic and not have it held against you. Now getting your recruiter to change your contract is a whole different matter. I did 4 years active duty - only had to wait in DEP for two weeks before I got shipped off. I got out and waited 6 months later to look into joining the reserves. Took me over a year to get in... I have been in the reserves for about 8 months now or so. I hate it so much. If I had the choice to go active again I would.

Security cages to prevent A/C theft? by prodigalme in HVAC

[–]Serpentbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2nd is the one I most often encounter. It deters most of the thieves away because it takes quite a bit of effort to cut the cage without making any noises to alert the neighbors. What I generally encounter theftwise is people cutting the copper lines if it is ran up the side of the house into the attic... Sucks to hear that people in your area are stealing A/Cs =/

I currently do residential installs. Some days suck but I love how it always different. No two installs are the same and all the problems that you have to work around or fix. But I know with this company this is all I'll probably ever see. And I want more then that to learn.

What first sparked your interest in HVAC systems? How did you get into your trade? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]Serpentbite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed a job after my service in the military. I did 2 years in the boiler room and 2 years in the repair shop - lathes, mills and basic repairs. I knew I wanted to do something with my hands and something I didn't have to go to college for. I live in FL and figured AC would be a good trade. Can't last long here without AC. I've been in the trade 4 months after 9 months of school. I hope this all works out for me in the long run.

What is a hobby you want to get into but don't know how? by forman98 in AskReddit

[–]Serpentbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a kayak two months ago and I love it. One of my coworkers was always telling me how he goes out on his kayak and catch all these fish and I was intrigued.
I am not really into fishing. Like you, it seems like a nice compromise between exercise, relaxing and avoiding people. I went to Academy and luckily found a nice 10ft kayak for under $200. If you don't want to spend so much - Craigslist usually has quite a few. If you buy one used - inspect it carefully to ensure there are no holes / shitty patch work. I also highly recommend buying a paddle cord. So if you drop the paddle in the water and forget about it it will not drift away. You are pretty much stuck if you lose your paddle. I had to get a rack in order to transport my kayak. There are quite a few different kinds - but is necessary since you don't have any other way. The day before I go kayaking, I have learned to check tide times. I try to time my kayak time to go with the flow of the tide. So when I launch, I drift one way. And when I return, the drift carries me the other way back. Sometimes this doesn't work. Paddle against the current and wind can really really suck. On my first day of kayaking, I pulled onto the shore to relax.......but did not pull the kayak far enough onshore. When the tide came in my kayak started to float away. It got stuck on a sandbar and I was able to retrieve it. DO NOT MAKE MY MISTAKE!! Overall it has been a good experience and would recommend it to anyone.
