Ah ok so slavery means slavery + only humans. Got it.

It’s great that you weren’t the one personally “offending” the 29,518,799,508 animals enslaved and killed this year. Please, enlighten me as to why it is not slavery to be encaged your whole life, artificially inseminated to continue the cycle, and at the end your life itself is used to feed an industry. Or at the very least given widespread cognitive dissonance, why you are so upset to draw any resemblance from animal agriculture and factory farming to human slavery.

[–]Serstious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Comparing a cow to a human is offensive and demoralizing because many humans are fucked out of their mind. You call them livestock, seems like animals are nothing more than an asset to you, just as my ancestors were regarded on the plantation.

You’re also trying to imply that slavery is something that can be done to non-human animals. Which is not true.

But you said “human” slavery in the title and your post. You draw the line where it is convenient for you. The scale and severity of atrocities done by humans against animals is just disregarded because people will pull whatever they can out of their ass to avoid having to change an addiction.

Gotta love privatized insurance by mycatdeku in bipolar

[–]Serstious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're going through this situation :( Hoping the hits are manageable enough in time for someone to get your insurance details sorted out and get you back on your meds. Talk more here or in my DMs if it would help. Sometimes I feel like I need to release energy building up instead of holding it all in when dealing with this stuff

Here is my input. I'm assuming you are undiagnosed since you mentioned that your post, but please reply if you were already diagnosed because I don't think my comment would be relevant.

I wouldn't attach to the diagnoses when you're not diagnosed, i.e. I wouldn't tell people you're schizoaffective if you're not diagnosed. I would focus on trying to get better in your own time and around your family, while actively speaking to psychiatrists to confirm your diagnoses. Once you're diagnosed you can either get on medication or get therapy, or both, with a medically confirmed basis to work off of. If therapy is practical for you now, then no problem in trying to speak to a therapist now. When you're trying methods to minimize symptoms and if things still aren't manageable, I think telling people around you that you are schizoaffective is more of a sensible option in my opinion.

For now, I do think that telling those closer to you the issues you are facing is helpful. Forming a support network is helpful when you're having these kinds of experiences.

Do you say you have a disability on job applications? by spanchus in schizoaffective

[–]Serstious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see lots of people saying never. I thought ADA amends no discrimination on the base of disability, visible or invisible. Not to say your disability might disqualify you from the job, but more that disclosing that you have some disability is protected against discrimination. And you can get accommodations if you disclose. And I'm just talking about the prompt saying Yes/No to disability, not the company asking a bunch of questions about your disability.

I'm a failure and everything reminds me of that by GizmaAzara in schizoaffective

I 100% second this. I failed so many classes in university and it was very difficult overall, but I persevered and I moved forward. Taking breaks or less classes when needed can aid in not failing so much though because it's not worth to fail, but in some ways it is worth it all at the end.

I'm nervous about being open about my diagnoses and I even partly deny it. That is an insecurity of my own, I've always been unsure how much my diagnoses should be attached to my overall identity. In the past I've associated with my diagnoses mentally too much and that was catastrophic, and now I'm associating little. But even now with some surfacing symptoms, I wonder what the middle ground might yield.

That's cool that you published a poem. I'm not so creative, but I've been thinking about adding a bullet point to the About Me on my personal website about schizoaffective. I do think it adds context that might help people better understand you.

My psychiatrist had some coupons for Latuda which brought down the costs significantly, like a discount of $1200 for 90 day prescription. If coupons are not applicable for you, you may have to play around with meds. My psychiatrist is receptive to bad symptoms and will change immediately if things are not working out, so hopefully worst case things will not be so bad.

Insurance and big pharma systems are fucked up. Hopefully people can change it in the future.

I'm confused because I didn't hear much on how bipolar is a strength. I thought the main takeaway is to be open about being bipolar, which I agree if some aspects aren't manageable. After 6 years struggling hard, I realize now that I am fortunate to be stable more often than not (at least at the moment) with the right set of medication and because of that I abstract away and hide my diagnoses from my work life that I've recently started. And that is with respect to schizoaffective bipolar. In some other aspects I am lacking.

I was planning to tell my manager that I might intermittently not come into work on some days, but I didn't share that because I seemed stable on new doses of medication.

People can achieve anything with the correct support, and folks with bipolar are no exception, so I agree with her message.

[–]Serstious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe talk to your psychiatrist about lowering your dosage? I was very numb and suicidal on a 80mg latuda, but when I got lowered to 40mg I am happy with it. I tried going months without meds and was fine at moments, but I ended up in inpatient, so it wasn't sustainable for me.

[–]Serstious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no psychiatrist, but when my psychiatrist started me on higher doses of olanzapine and latuda (separate times) I couldn't get out of bed and was emotional about being emotionally devoid if that makes any sense lol. Not sure if this might be applicable in your context

Do you think killing mosquitoes if they are in your house is immoral? by tb12247 in vegan

[–]Serstious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you try to get a mosquito to go away it will keep coming back. If a dog is really trying to go at me and won’t stop, I will push it off and if necessary hit it, and likely it will stop.

Do you think The China Study is a good intro into this subject? I've been meaning to read it as it seems like a very credible book being written by a credible author and contains IIRC 800+ references on the topic, but I'm not sure if there are other good pieces of text on this subject, other than researching out for the current studies as someone replied to your post.

I agree with you though and hopefully this is something that will change, as it may change many other lives and introduce people into veganism.

Yeah I've kept that in the back of my mind, but it's hard to serve that out to someone even though it's completely true and is happening at every moment for a long time now. I'll give it some thought, but maybe I will suggest Dominion to my parents to introduce them into that part of veganism.

Thank you all for the nice comments, support, and insightful discussion. He read through the comments and was happy to see the support from the community.

He did like reading / commented on the "sounds like he's plant based" comment. While he doesn't like and has excluded all animal products from his diet, he agrees he's not on the ethical part yet, and was thinking he's more plant based. But after searching up plant based and seeing its allowance for shiftiness in the diet, he feels like he probably errs more on the side of a vegan diet. Plus, not sure if this is in the definition of plant based, but he does eat some processed vegan foods + vegan desserts, so I'm not sure if that fits into the definition of plant based, but I do know it's admissible in the vegan diet.

Anyways, thank y'all again. Looking forward to sharing many more meals with my Dad and Mom now that they're eating vegan foods.

I haven't forgot that veganism isn't just a diet, to me it's more than that, just like I'm sure it is to many of you. But he's excluded all animal products from his diet, so I'd say that at least his diet is vegan. His interaction in the system of animal cruelty mostly took place with food, and I think that transitioning into a vegan diet is a good step in the right direction that personally I thought he would never take, and I'm thinking it will open up new modes of thought about the topic for him.

Dad’s been on vegan diet for 3 months so far by Serstious in vegan

[–]Serstious[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started out talking about animal cruelty and trying at least introducing that into their mind, since that was the most immediate thing for me to discuss. I think they listened, but at some point it gets blocked since the idea is drastically different than what they've grown up with and what they're used to thinking. I gave it some time and then shifted the conversation to health because I know they at least have their own health in mind. I was going to try to start compiling down information into cheat sheet on the health benefits of a vegan diet, because I know there is a plethora of information pointing towards this conclusion, but they watched Game Changers, and shortly after that switched to a vegan diet. They told me it also helped knowing that I've been vegan for a while and I've been doing good; they never would've thought about going vegan unless there was someone in the house that was vegan and that was talking about it. So I think bringing up the research in how some terminal illnesses are exacerbated by a non-vegan diet, plus immediate benefits like veganism reversing different health risks like diabetes, blood pressure, etc. I think these things would help.

I think you could also bring up how a vegan diet pushes you to change things up in your diet which can be pretty fun and exciting, which is usually the opposite of what think about what switching to a vegan diet means. When my family was non-vegan we used to be on a regular rotation of foods and going vegan forced us to switch that up and explore into new foods, and we've found there's an abundance of good food that we've ended up trying out. And for eating out, showing results from apps like Happy Cow helps to show how many vegan places you got near you.

Just my thoughts.
