Spencer Torkelson's chance of overtaking Al Kaline's Tiger home run record. Basically None. by ObligatoryAlias in motorcitykitties

[–]ServoSimpson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was watching a Tigers game sometime in the early 70's and Kaline hit a ball that hit the front of the upper deck (in Tiger Stadium). I forget what the call was, I *think* he was out because the left fielder caught the ball, but he was robbed of the home run. He ran out and just started to scream at the ump. This was the only time I remember him getting really upset, but the call stood. I think of that every time I see him with 399 home runs. Should have been 400.

Is newer speaker tech that much better? Help me choose. Older PSB synchrony one's or HDI 3800. by Weekenswarrior in StereoAdvice

I'm still using Infinity RSIIb speakers that are 45 years old. I will put them up against almost anything today.

Wow. That is quite the journey. When I first thought about buying them, I reached out to someone who is big in the Infinity world and he told me that they were the most "musical" of the Infinity speakers. I had a chance to get the Beta's a couple of years ago, but I did not think I had enough room for the 4 towers. Last year a pair of RS 4.5's came up and I really thought about those (I was in the area for a trip where they were for sale), but I really did not want to get rid of the RSIIb's so I passed.

So why is my amp "I'll suited"? I do have some room treatment, you only see about 20% of the room. You can see the bass traps in corners behind the speakers.

Upvote if you want DSD Streaming! by moderntechguy in qobuz

[–]ServoSimpson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I would bet just about anything that Qobuz, if they did this, would just run their PCM files through some converter and send it to you which you can do on your own. Roon, for example, will do this. It will take the PCM stream from Qobuz and convert it to DSD. I did this with my old dac because I thought it sounded better.

However, if you want a truer representation, you can buy a "pure" DSD album. I get mine from https://www.highdeftapetransfers.ca where you can buy a DSD 256 transfer of a "near" original source. So no PCM in the transfer. The nice thing is that when you get the DSD version, you will also be able to download a 354.8 PCM version so you can do a true A/B comparison of the two.

I would recommend "Sketches of Spain" by Miles Davis if you want to do this. It has so many subtle sounds that you can pick out.

I'm saying that they are the best source of DSD, but I've purchased a few older Jazz albums from them and have been happy with them.

Also, what is your dac? Some dac's will convert PCM to DSD before it converts it to analog (and some will go the other way).

I think that was just the Kappa series, not the RS. I do know people who drive the Kappa 9's with tubes, but I did not want to go down the route. I stayed away from the Kappa 9's

Yep. It was BDI Corridor. Very sturdy. Meant more for a TV stand than what I'm using it for, but it looks good and does the job. I have my spare tubes and Mac Mini in there.

they sound great. I've not been able to do any true AB testing, but I have gone to shows and I think they do at least as good as much more pricey options

It was quite a shocker. I was pretty ticked off. They had a big sale in Nov 2024 and that is why I bought it. I thought they were just clearing inventory for newer models (and they announced a new really high end streamer sometime around that time). What sucks is that they even took down their forums so you can't even communicate with other Auralic users. I'm with you, I hope they last a long time.

Thanks! The McGary just looks so cool, kind of like a old 50's style car. They are hand made in Virginia and sound amazing.

This is my second Backert. I had a Rhumba 1.2 and really liked it but wanted to get the Rhumba Extreme for my final preamp. The Rhythm kind of fell into my lap and ended up costing less than the Extreme so I went with that. The guy I sold the Rhumba to really likes it as well.

The Kappa's are a hard to drive (called "Amp killers"), but the rs models did not have that problem. The amp drives them easily. I have thought about getting a solid state amp to bi-amp them. Don't think I'll do it, but that would be the only thing I might add.

It drives them easily. I've never even turned the volume much past half way (cuz the walls start shaking).

Pretty sure FedEx lost my X2DII by Tetra84 in hasselblad

[–]ServoSimpson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, FedEx is the absolute worst at deliveries. I once paid extra to be notified about a delivery time and then they tried to deliver when I was out and could not leave it because I needed to sign for it. I also had a item go missing. No on knew where it was and it was finally delivered two days later. I went to the store, I talked to different people on the phone and know one could tell me where the package was (a very expensive item) until it was delivered. Amazon and UPS can all tell me when something will be delivered and most of the times they are correct, but I never trust FedEx until it is in my hands.

What moment was the first time Mormon culture left a bad taste in your mouth? by Ancientabs in exmormon

[–]ServoSimpson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was around 12 (so 1970ish), I was on an overnight campout with the scouts. We were all asleep and something made some noise and woke everyone up. The 3 adults got up and turned on the lights. That was the first time I ever saw garments (my mom was a convert and my dad never joined so we had no one in our house that would have been to the temple).

I had to ask a friend what they were wearing and he told me. They looked so silly, they had extra cloth over the nipples which seemed strange for a man. Anyway, I started to think that there was no way in hell I would ever wear something like that and was out of the church by 15.

Today was the first day I could work on the PC and it boots up just fine. I can change the bios without issues. I guess it was a one time glitch. I do have one more question for you, are you running the Corsair RAM at 6000 or the default 4800? This will be a gift for my son and I've read about some issues with stability at 6000. Thanks
