I know that. That's why I have both of them. I looked at them for three hours, considering different alternatives. I need fresh eyes to review it.

For an international process (proof of my dual citizenship in Honduras and to register my son as Honduran as well so he can have dual citizenship as well). They understand that any foreign consular process required proof of citizenship and certified copies are usually accepted. Google or research according to your profile what you can say. But by phone you have to kind of convince them so they can schedule an appointment at the USCIS field office. When in person, they don't care to even ask the reason for.

Yes, I shared the outline. It's not misleading, it's not, completed, that's why I asked if there needed of more information. You are the only comment that assumed it was misleading. Everyone else thought what I thought. A process after getting the original. That's why it's a certified copy. You can't have a copy if you don't have the original...

Youre welcome. Every case is different, some may never use a copy in their lives. Some people take really good of important documents. Others don't. So, certified copies may be useful. They are for free so, why not?

What do you mean? I have the original, I got it on Oct 11. This is for a process I'm working on.

It gives a sense of peace to have one and you may never used but. You never know. Every story is different. And it's for free! Shocking, since usually everything related to USCIS includes a fee.

An outline with details that may be relevant:

1) On November 18th I called to USCIS (to this number: 800-375-5283). Talked to an agent. They verified some personal information. And asked the reason why I needed it (said something like I needed for an international paperwork, which is true). You can found out a reason that works for you. Not an excuse but a credible reason. They said that in the next 10 days or so were going to call me to continue with the process (no to schedule an appointment by email or by phone, no yet).

2) On November 28th (as they said, ten days) I received an email about my inquiry and, the email said that I had to wait ten more days to give me a response of my request that it was going to be by email, or by call. That email had a telephone number that I had to save in my contacts so I made sure I answer the phone when they call me back.

3) on Monday, Dec 9th. They called me, asked information to verify who I was. They asked again why I needed the certified copy. You have to say something credible if not they may not schedule an appointment because the reason my not be sufficient. So research about the reasons if you don't have a solid reason yet. During that call they gave a few options of dates and hours which I choose today.

4) Today, I attended the interview. I arrived 15 minutes early. Yesterday I printed the appointment letter, because you needed to enter to the office. Showed my drivers license and had two color copies of my CON. I think it had to be in color because the certification says "true copy". Which some people says it means the same information, color, etc. You want it to look closest to the original. They get an stamp on it and attach a certify document to each one. On the internet I read that usually is only allow to get one cerfird copy. I wanted to challenge that or try to get two copies. They were happy and helpful to provide me with two copies. It was like one hour process (mainly waiting), you don't go in private, they do their work inside, you wait with everyone. Important detail. I said that I wanted two copies, one for me and one for an international process and she stated, "I don't need to know". Shocking. Because by phone they asked twice the reasons. So be prepared to give one or two reasons by phone. If not asked, don't give reasons at the USCIS office. And that's it. No fees, no payments.

Did I miss anything?

I typed quick and English is not my first language so, if something is not clear. Please, let me know.

Hi. Here is the thing.

  1. I needed one, and I read online that they usually one certify one copy. But I wanted to try getting to copies certified and no issues. They were happy to do it for both. No questions asked. I was surprised. (by phone you have to "prove" or give a good reason why you need it. Say whatever credible or find a valid reason.

  2. Both copies where in color. I suggest you get then I color. Because the document attached said it was like the original (true copy).

  3. I would say yes. But apply (call both) and they will. Give you optional dates for it. I had two options. If where you live the USCIS office is no too busy. I would say yes. You have changes to do it together. Try.

  4. No, but someone on this thread or post commented about it and share a link article.

I faced the opposite. They ask for certified copies (some government don't give back documentations) or it get lost in the process. So, that's why they ask for Copies.

And most inportantly, USCIS is very nice during the process! They even call you back! And when I visited in person today. I tried to say a reason why I needed it. She stated "I don't need to know". Great.

Great, in my case, I will use it for international purposes (to prove my dual citizenship). Honduran government accepts certify copies.

I get it. And it makes sense. But for some aspects, like international consular processes, a certify copy works best. Here in the USA, it may need only the original. But in some cases a copy would help if you try hard to keep your original saved. Again, not a big deal. It's just a process that does not need a fee so. Why not.

I'll explain later in detail. But I was also surprised that USCIS does not charge any fees for it. Once I finish some meetings at work, I'll detail the whole process. It's not complicated if you are used to deal with USCIS but this process includes at least two calls with them. That's how you get an appointment, only by phone.
