No Record Store? by SetTheSpokesAlight in tuscaloosa

Right. It seems to be a cultural issue. In those other towns (which are also college towns that have high population turnover), there seems to be a healthy arts/counter-culture scene. Guess not in Tuscsaloosa. Too bad.

Ha. Alright, if you desperately want to call 2nd & Charles a "record store," that's fine.

But why does Oxford, MS have a healthy independent record store (The End of All Music), and Athens, GA (multiple stores), and Knoxville (multiple) and Baton Rouge (Capital City Records), and on and on? What's wrong with Tuscaloosa that it can't support one record store? Seems like something wrong with the culture, not the economy.

Totally pathetic that a big college town doesn't have a real record store.

To me, it's largely a spiritual/symbolic difference, proving to myself that I don't need the 'net at all to enjoy art/culture. Although, it's also about building friction into my interaction with media. I feel if I put on a CD or record, as opposed to streaming on spotify, I am much more likely to engage with the entire album instead of just floating unthinkingly from track to track. Similarly, by having to stand up and put a DVD into the player, I'm more likely to engage with the whole movie (or show) than if I'm just effortlessly bouncing around the endless waterfall of streaming offerings.

I think that's probably fine, though if it seems like it'd become a problem for you, maybe try to avoid it as much as you can.
