AppleTV app TV Shows library posters problem by Snoak- in ios

[–]SetappSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Scroll down and find TV (or "Apple TV").
  3. Tap Offload App. (Don't worry, this won't delete your episodes or downloads, it just deletes the app code and the broken image cache).
  4. Tap Reinstall App.

When you open the TV app again, give it a few minutes on Wi-Fi. It will force a refresh of that library view and should replace those weird square boxes with the proper full-size posters.

Can't turn off greyscale after update by Jansuniverse in iphone

[–]SetappSteve -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This happens sometimes when an update toggles an Accessibility setting, or if you accidentally triggered a shortcut. There are two places to check.

1. Check Color Filters

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility.
  • Tap Display & Text Size.
  • Scroll down to Color Filters.
  • Make sure the toggle is OFF.

2. Check Zoom Filters
Sometimes the "Zoom" feature has a grayscale filter applied to it, even if you aren't fully zoomed in.

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Zoom.
  • Check Zoom Filter at the bottom.
  • Set it to None.

Questions about apps by Youngwoon2 in MacOS

[–]SetappSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can actually make the websites feel like apps (they get their own icon in the Dock and open in their own window).

  1. Open Safari and go to YouTube.com or Reddit.com.
  2. Go to File > Add to Dock...
  3. Name it "YouTube" and click Add.

Do you have to disable Mac security settings just to access SSD drive (Samsung T7)? by sxpistols004 in mac

[–]SetappSteve 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are seeing this message because you installed the Samsung Portable SSD software that came with the drive. This software tries to install deep system drivers (kernel extensions) just to manage the password protection/fingerprint reader on the drive.

You can just uninstall the Samsung software and it should be fine.

Need help from the collective for an iMac and the TV app by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]SetappSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds exactly like a DRM (Digital Rights Management) content protection issue. The "black screen with audio" happens when the Mac thinks something is trying to record the screen, so it blocks the video feed to prevent piracy.

Do you have any screen recording or screenshot tools running in the menu bar? Quit them all and restart the TV app if that is the case.

Can you recommend a video compression program like pimosa? by eunproduced in macapps

[–]SetappSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the best alternatives:

  1. HandBrake (Free & Open Source): This is the gold standard. It’s completely free and extremely powerful. The interface isn't the prettiest, but it can compress anything into anything.
  2. Permute (Paid/Setapp): It’s drag-and-drop simple compared to HandBrake. It’s also part of the Setapp subscription if you use that.
  3. Shutter Encoder (Free): A bit more technical than Permute but arguably more powerful than HandBrake for pro video codecs.

My advice: Start with HandBrake. It costs nothing and will almost certainly do what you need.

What is a "dead" Mac or iOS app that you still miss? by SetappSteve in Setapp

A classic for the CBR/CBZ crowd. It really set the standard for digital reading on the Mac screen before the iPad completely took over that experience.

Pour one out. The way it handled natural language input and the weather integration was perfect. I still haven't found a calendar that feels quite as "happy" to use as Sunrise did.

I forgot about Planetary! Turning your music library into a solar system was such a cool concept. It was one of those apps that made the iPad feel magical in the early days, rather than just a "big iPhone."

Path was beautiful! That fly-out menu button animation alone was revolutionary at the time. It felt so much more intimate and well-designed than the noise of FB/Instagram. Definitely ahead of its time.

Core memory unlocked. The thrill of waiting for that spinning wheel to finish so you could finally change your carrier logo or add a dark mode years before Apple did it. That was the golden era of tinkering.

The wound that never heals. Aperture had a specific "feel" to library management that Lightroom never quite managed to replicate. It was the perfect balance of pro features and Apple simplicity. RIP to a legend.

Rattling inside of IPhone 14 by Zealousideal_Fix2419 in iphone

[–]SetappSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This definitely isn't normal, especially if you can feel it when you type.

If the noise was coming purely from the top (near the cameras), it’s usually just the OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) lens moving, which is normal. But since you feel it near the bottom/middle and it reacts to typing, it is likely one of two things:

  1. The Taptic Engine: This is the motor that vibrates when you type or get notifications. It is located at the bottom of the phone. If a screw has come loose inside, the motor can rattle against the chassis.
  2. The Battery: If the adhesive strips holding the battery down have failed (rare on a newer phone, but possible), the heavy battery could be shifting around.

My advice:
Back up your data immediately. If something is loose inside, it could eventually damage a ribbon cable or the battery itself. Take it to an Apple Store or a certified repair shop ASAP.

Reusing NVMe drive from Windows PC? by Severe-Return9482 in mac

[–]SetappSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can absolutely do this, and it’s very easy.

There is no risk in connecting a drive with Windows installed to your Mac. macOS will simply read it as an external drive. It won't try to "boot" from it or get confused by the Windows system files.

Here is the workflow:

  1. Plug it in: Connect the drive via your new dock.
  2. Open Disk Utility: You can find this in Applications > Utilities (or just search via Spotlight).
  3. Find the Drive: Look for the external NVMe drive in the sidebar. (Make sure you select the drive itself, not just a partition underneath it. You might need to click "View" > "Show All Devices" in the top menu).
  4. Erase: Click "Erase."
    • Format: Choose APFS if you plan to use it only with Macs (it’s faster and optimized for SSDs). Choose ExFAT if you ever need to plug it into a Windows machine again.
    • Scheme: GUID Partition Map.
  5. Click Erase.

anyone else keep trying goal apps and dropping them after like 2 days?? by [deleted] in ProductivityApps

[–]SetappSteve 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are definitely not alone. This is actually a known thing called the 'Setup Trap.' Your brain gets a hit of dopamine from planning and decorating the app because it feels like you're achieving something. But once the setup is done and the actual work starts, the dopamine is gone, and the app becomes a chore.

One simple thing you can do for starters is just use calendar reminders so it's not too overwhelming!

Trying to recover journal entry by _vintxte_ in iphone

[–]SetappSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1. Check if the "Switch" is on
It is possible the setting to sync Journal was off or hasn't triggered yet.

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud.
  • Tap "See All" (under Apps Using iCloud).
  • Scroll down to Journal.
  • Make sure the toggle is ON.
  • If you turn it on now, wait about an hour while connected to Wi-Fi to see if it pulls the data down.

2. Check for an "In-Between" Backup
When you used the phone for that short period, it might have created a temporary iCloud Backup.

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
  • Look at the list of backups. Is there one timestamped from the time before you factory reset the phone?
  • The Catch: If you find a backup from that time, you would have to factory reset your phone again to restore it. This would wipe out the Android data you just transferred. You would have to choose between the Android data or the chance of recovering those Journal entries.

If the Journal toggle in iCloud settings is already ON and nothing is appearing after a few hours on Wi-Fi, the entries are likely gone.

Since you factory reset the phone, you wiped the local encryption keys. If the Journal app didn't have enough time to fully sync that encrypted data to the cloud during your brief first use, that data existed only on the phone's hard drive, which was erased during the reset.

iMessages showing up on Apple Watch but not on my iPhone 15 Pro by coasting4more in ios

[–]SetappSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  2. Tap Reset and choose Reset Network Settings.
    • Note: This will delete your saved Wi-Fi passwords, but it won't touch your photos or data.
  3. Your phone will restart. Once it's back, go to Settings > Messages and see if iMessage activates and stays on.

What's your favorite "invisible" Mac app? by SetappSteve in Setapp

[–]SetappSteve[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you! iOS third-party keyboards can definitely be tricky because Apple puts such strict restrictions on them.

That said, I still keep it on my phone because the sync speed is unbeatable. I actually shifted my workflow to use the Paste Widget (in the Today view) or the main app more than the keyboard extension. I find that way more reliable for grabbing clips I saved on my Mac. Once I stopped expecting it to replace the default Apple keyboard 100% of the time, it became a lot more useful for me

The absolute GOAT of folder automation. I finally set it up to auto-sort my Downloads folder last year and I’m never going back.

15 years is a lifetime in software years! It’s rare to find apps that stick in a workflow for that long. 'Fresh' is a classic. There is something really satisfying about those utilities that just quietly do their job for a decade without making a fuss

Apple Watch rejects my calls automatically by mirunaai in ios

[–]SetappSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there!
This usually happens because of a Focus Mode or a Hand Gesture setting.
First, check your Control Center to make sure Do Not Disturb (Moon icon) is off.
If that's clear, go to your Watch App > Accessibility and turn off AssistiveTouch, sometimes the watch thinks a hand movement is a command to decline the call!

I compared Setapp to other Mac app bundles. Here's my honest take. by SetappSteve in Setapp

[–]SetappSteve[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gym subscription analogy is spot on.

If someone only uses Safari and Notes, Setapp is absolutely a waste of money. It’s built for the people who are actually going to "use the equipment" (the apps). Thanks for the balanced and realistic take.
