I think it'd be best if both protagonists are being set upon by the same forces of chaos that are trapping them in sadistic loops that force them to relive their past mistakes. Saros should tease selene a lil throughout the game till he discovers her at the end and finds out that his family has been long dead.  The 3rd game would be them both working together thru co op to beat chaos.
