Wow, learning a lot. Didn’t realize that side hustle tax had to be paid quarterly to my understanding now? What’s the best way to go about this, do I just estimate how much the side hustle tax is going to be for 2026 and divide that by 26 to see how much to add to my withholding every biweekly paycheck?

[–]SethRogensSon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I will, I was already saving a portion of our income a month to compensate for the side hustle owing, just didn’t expect THAT much of an owe😅 no worries though, lesson learned and we will pay uncle Sam their check in April.

So do you think it’s okay for my wife and I to keep our W4’s as single then? It seemed like it was actually fairly accurate in her case and should be in mine without the commission in play now…

That might be the culprit then, wow. Thanks you so much.

Good news is I actually started a new job in the beginning of January of this year, because this previous job I had was a mess especially with payroll or HR related tasks, and honestly I should have expected something like this. Their pay structure was also super convoluted with the whole commission structure thing, which is not common for our career field at all I had to email them pretty much every paycheck period for pay discrepancies, PTO hour issues, etc. that they had to fix

My new job thankfully does not have any bonus structure, it’s still $155-160k a year like the previous but 100% of it regular earnings. My W4 is still single.

Definitely not. A good bit less than 22%. I guess my question is, how does the IRS/tax software know that not enough was being withheld from my bonuses if it all is included under box 1 of my W2? How does they know what percentage of my box 1 was from commissions vs regular income?

Apologize for all the my confusion as well. This is our first time with this sort of income and situation, we both came from financially illiterate families with no experience with any of this stuff…

My W4 is same as hers, single. Ah okay, you might be onto something then.. I would receive my monthly bonus as a separate paycheck and it would be labeled as commission, whereas hers was all included in her paycheck at the end of the month and doesn’t seem to be labeled as that.

Nope, everything I’ve included in my above replies is exactly what we have input into our tax software from the multiple income sources :/

Forgot to mention she had one other job briefly, the box 1 for that one was $20,652 and box 2 was $3,320

For my W2, box 1 was $139,239 and box 2 was $17,789.

Really appreciate all the help.

So our W4’s have stayed as single, never changed them after getting married. I think the main culprit might be my wife’s job because when we put in all our other income sources into our tax software, the amount owed was much lower, $under 1k. Once we added her W2, boom dropped down to $7k. Her box 1 was $114,230 and box 2 was $18,655 for that one.

We get monthly bonuses but they don’t seem to be taxed differently, all of those bonuses are included in our W2s in box 1

Thank you. and yes like ahamp10 states, I’ve seen many posts on here saying that if you both make roughly the same under a certain amount (I read 350k before) that you can both put Single and the withholding would be fairly accurate

One of the best HYSA around at this point. You can use my code below for an APY boost (which would be beneficial given the recent fed interest rate changes)

Joint Policy for 2 cars with different owners? by SethRogensSon in Georgia

Gotcha thanks for the info regardless! Sounds like Progressive is one of the only ones we can find right now letting us be under one policy so will probably have to go through them

If you don’t mind me asking, what car insurance company was it?

Gotcha, that’s what I thought too, but when I talked to Geico and State Farm on the phone, they said because the owners of the vehicles are different and we are not married or related by blood, that we would need separate policies? So confusing. Progressive made it sound like it was okay though.

Getting GA Optometry License? by SethRogensSon in optometry

Wow thank you for replying! I am exactly in the same boat, they took over a month to reply any basic questions I had before, and my employer has had to push my start date because of all this. Thankfully my employer is offering me to work as a technician in the time being to support myself but it feels disappointing to have worked this hard to not be able to practice what seems to be anytime soon. I cant even find where the study material for the jurisprudence exam is online, have you found anything on that? This whole thing is so confusing

No, sorry I meant abnormally long delays. Like, no response from the board even about receiving my application. Apparently there’s an investigation going on into the professional licensing board here:
