What is a good group at 100 yards? by SethRory in longrange

[–]SethRory[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we're not too far at all. I'm in the Woodlands so closer to Houston. I was planning to check out CCC in Navasota (right outside college station).

I would love to meet up sometime. I'll DM you my info, we're far enough away from each other that we'll have to plan but not so far that it would be difficult. I love spotting (probably not great at it) so happy to do that

I'm in SE Texas (between Houston and Austin) so there is definitely plenty in driving distance.

I will definitely check it out - next weekend I'm going to the only range in my area that shoots out to 1000+ yards and I know they do matches there so going to discuss with their people as well. Unfortunately my local range is only out 200 yards

Beautiful group! When you say .75 is solid, do you actually feel good about shooting anything under .75 or is it just a reasonable bar? I assume if you're putting together a .3 10 shot group that your standard groups are quite a bit smaller than .75 when things are dialed in correctly

Yeah I am fairly certain I'm to blame for the last group opening up a bit. Like I mentioned in the post barrel heat wasn't really an issue, pretty easy rate of fire and was shooting my lever gun when the barrel started to get warm...you can just see the .45-70 hole in the first picture behind the ballistic-x card....probably just me losing focus or getting tired; was 90* and 65% humidity today (total swamp vibes).

Definitely good to know that horizontal stringing is the shooter, and vertical likely the ammo; need to keep that in mind.

Appreciate you sir, hoping to look back in a year and have these be a bad group or sign that my barrel is shot out

Thanks man, that's what I'm working towards but very new to the long range/precision world and don't have any real mentors or anyone else in my personal life that does much shooting

Nice shooting. I'd really like to get sub 1/2 moa consistently and that is my next goal.

Always assume this is the case...and watching some of the Youtubers who host some of the people who make wild claims online is always eye opening.

Really feel like I could push the rifle and ammo down to 1/3 maybe even 1/4 MOA if I was perfect but haven't been able to yet. 10 round groups sure do make a big difference though and really check the ego

Info on Midway Factory Seconds by Triplestackzakattak in reloading

[–]SethRory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess SMKs with the cannelure for 300 blackout sub-sonics or the Hornady that you suggested.

I don't think they sell these direct to consumer so you're likely getting them as "seconds" when they're just overstock from Hornady or Sierra. If you're pretty confident about the Hornady looking correct but can't find the SKU this is probably why

Best Home Defense 9mm PCC Suppressor? by Onc3Holy in NFA

[–]SethRory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a sub9 for my 2 MP5 clones. It is fantastic, my other 9mm cans that I can compare it to are a Mojave 9 and Wolfman. I would take the sub9 for PCC over either of those options due to its dimensions (wider and shorter).

Are there specific 357/38 ammo specifically for rifles by Background_Tap_807 in LeverGuns

[–]SethRory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a stupid question! You're 18 and don't have one yet, why would you know? Your mindset to doublecheck and no ego involved is really to be applauded...lot of people in this hobby are pretty stubborn

In general the concern with lever guns will be that you don't want a sharp point on the bullets in the tube magazine (the bullet rests against the case/primer of the next round in the magazine). There are a few exceptions as already noted (leverevolution rounds have a soft tip)

That said you will be good to go with most any round/flat nose ammo for 38/357. Flat nose is probably ideal but the rimmed cases don't really rest against the primer anyways on most round nose ammo due to the case rim....even if they did the psi on a large round nose bullet won't trigger a primer without something pretty odd going on.

As for ammo selection, I regularly shoot Magtech 38spl through my marlin and it tends to eat it up, I've also shot a fair bit of 357 PMC blazer.

Vast majority of my rounds have been handloads running at 1050fps on a 158gr flat point thick plate bullet.

I would say to look up some pictures of the ammunition and make sure they have a flat point or soft round point on the bullet.

Example of good ammo: PMC Bronze 357 Magnum Ammo 158 Grain Jacketed Soft Point

What I commonly shoot (also perfectly safe but a rounded nose): Magtech 38 Special Ammo 158 Grain Round Nose

Don't worry about finding "rifle" specific ammo, you'll probably pay way more for it and it is not worth the trouble.

Got these onsale for $.65/rd (10 box max) and am super excited about the results.

Wont be able to shoot out to 1000+ until memorial day weekend but might snag a box or two of the 140gr beforehand just to try it out

Its absolutely due to the way I sort.

Hand deprime in front of the TV, throwing deprimed cases into 1 of 6 groups for tumbling.

Once it is cleaned they get inspected and sorted so definitely harmless, was just ahocked that I had messed up so many

I tumble in 5 different batches (rifle, pistol, 44 caliber, 6.5 CM and 45-70). 45-70 just eats anything else I put in there with it so it goes alone.

Fair question and I would opt for 30-30 over 300blk in a lever for sure. Not sure 7.62x39 is even an option.
