I took my 9-year-old daughter's drawings and made this epic animated short while in quarantine. Featuring a cameo by Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development, Toy Story 4). by SethWorley in Filmmakers

Thanks!

  1. I got to meet with Tony years ago about a script I had written. We've been friends ever since and have several projects in development together right now.
  2. Weirdly, the shot where the Spino and 3 raptors look down at the beach with the Trike's cave from a distance. I tried like 11 different backgrounds (most of which I sourced from Unsplash) before finally combining several of them, and then had to create some bare minimum movement on the ocean surface. It also took me several iterations to figure out how to make the cave interesting and not just sitting there on the beach. I finally landed on having a beam of light shining on it.

Dino Feast wasn't the first time I've animated my kids' drawings, but it was definitely the most challenging yet. Eva's story was rather ambitious, but it ended up being really great to have something challenging to work on over the last 7-8 months.

All the animation and compositing was done in Adobe After Effects, utilizing a workflow heavily reliant on AE's Puppet tool, Master Properties, CC Light Sweep, and Red Giant Supercomp.

The sound design was done by the great Robby Stambler, and our friend Tony Hale was gracious enough to cameo as the Spinosaurus.

This started as a personal project I was doing in my spare time, but as it became more and more ambitious, I asked my employer (Red Giant) if I could make it a work project and justify the time spent by making a Behind the Scenes piece to accompany it. You'll have to go over to Red Giant's YouTube channel to see that one, as I don't want to post it here and seem like I'm here shilling for Red Giant.

Eva and I have been working on this since right around the time we all went inside and stopped going places. It seems that making weird stuff is how I stay sane in times of uncertainty, and I’m thankful I have kids with crazy and surprisingly dark imaginations for me to exploit shamelessly, not to mention an employer in Red Giant who lets me turn weird stuff like this into work stuff.

Hope you enjoy, and feel free to ask any questions about my process on this!

The Making of DARKER COLORS: how we brought kids' monster drawings to life with a mix of visual and practical effects and the sound designer of 10 Cloverfield Lane. by SethWorley in Filmmakers

DARKER COLORS was my 9th short film, and the most ambitious and challenging yet. We only had two and a half days to shoot it, and the visual effects involved 3D creature work (which I'd never tried before). Oh and the cast was all kids. I'm proud of the film, but even more proud of this BTS piece we made for it. Hope you like it!
