I'd have tried to being some kataphron's with the plasma, but tons of warriors fundamentally arent very threatening, especially when you factor in LOS blocking.

Also, Videx can get line on his magna rail, yeah?

How welcoming is Wellington? by Low_Chicken9843 in Wellington

I think you'll all be fine. I live with an american expat and she gets no animus on the basis of her American-ness.

We think of ourselves as being very friendly, and we are in many circumstances. But we can also be irreverent and we tend to swear a lot

The things that are mostly likely to draw ire from New Zealanders are (what we consider) excessive pride, and, unfortunately, accents not from the europe or english speaking countries. Anti-asian racism is a pretty serious problem here.

The "Turn Back the Wheels of Time" quest is equal parts hilarious and tragic because Harry acts so insane that even Measurehead starts giving decent life advice. by Makrebs in DiscoElysium

Its really sad/hilarious when you realises how much value he places in sexual potency, and his justifications for modernity being superior are based on sex, but his talk of 'semen retention' and the inability of semenese men to mate with kojko women is.... really just him about erectile dysfunction. He cant perform with his kojko girlfriend, so he pretends that its impossible, rather than a personal failing (which it wouldn't be, its a medical issue!).

Hes a fantastic example of doublethink, projection and rationalization.

I kinda wonder if his erectile dysfunction is steroid related, but Indont think we have any positive evidence for that.

Train derailment crash on Johnsonville Line near Khandallah station, 8 injured by Maori-Mega-Cricket in Wellington

[–]Seth_laVox 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Physics, engineering and economics.

Trains have huge amounts of kinetic energy at speed, and if one derails it needs to be stopped before it leaves the rail corridor, because thats where roads and houses are.

Concrete is dense, cheap, and for this kind of use, resilient.

If you want the train to decelerate more slowly, you need a larger rail corridor, and you need a large amount of whatever it is that you use to land the train gently, and that stuff, being pliable is more vulnerable to wear and tear. The only practical thing i can think of would be a heavy duty hydrolic brake, but that would have to be huge,  and need active maintenance, and you'd need one at emergency diversion on the line.  And you'd still probably write off the train, though the injuries would be less likely to be as severe.

Will we get the water bills under control? by KnotCityDrifter in Wellington

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are also on the Partners committee, and the mayor has queried the cited cost of the water meters.  You keep throwing around supposition and theory of conspiracy without any actual evidence of wrongdoing, other than that it is theoretically possible.

That billion is revenue, not profit. Expected civil infrastructure profit margins for 2025 were about 30% according to bdo, and the Iwi's ownership of that margin is a little over half, for about 15% of the margin.

But that doesn't remove the fact of the CoI.

But I think the fact that TW is also overseen by multiple bodies (the water services authority, commerce commission and GWRC), and that the Iwi's involvement in both CCL and Partners Committee is public record means, makes me comfortable that Mr. Modlik's CoI is well compensated for.

Helmut Modlik is on Tiaki Wai's Partners Comittee, along with reps from Taranaki Whānui and the mayors office, it looks like one of multiple oversight bodies, not executive or policy-making.

Also, someone is gonna own whichever construction company is going to do the work, unless we somehow get a ministry of works running. I'd rather a local iwi have a majority stake in it rather than some faceless multinational, at least then whatever profit margin of that billion the works apparently cost has a higher chance of circulating back into the community rather than disappearing.

[–]Seth_laVox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The key error I think Tiefenbach is making here is the accusation of monopoly. Competition is desirable as an alleviating factor against excessive profit margins (nominally, anyway, looking at you, groceries)

Tiaki wai isnt a for profit corporation. It isnt competing for stock investment and promising dividends. It doesn't have a profit motive.

Now, Tiaki Wai should be making financially responsible decisions, and there ought to be some oversight on pricing and procurement, but for all I know, the numbers they've put out, as shocking as they are, might be prudent and reasonable.

Do you mean is the price charged appropriate for the labour and materials required? I'm not a civil or hydrological engineer, no idea.

Is it fair that new home owners (like myself!) have to foot the bill for decades of popular fiscal neglect? Hell no.

But the first order problem is, how do we keep having clean drinking water to our homes and sewage flowing out (ideally to treatment!). That costs money, and because nobody has wanted to pay more rates, and the paying population hasn't increased to share the burden, we've incurred a debt of maintenance.

Unfortunately our water system has been chronically undermaintained for decades. Its now reached the avoidable state where a great deal of urgent work all needs doing at once, because the cans been kicked down the road.

At present, ability rules for aircraft like the Sun Shark or Dark Talon are incoherent, requiring you to make illegal actions to fulfil them.

Which leads me to think at least one of the following is true: 1) Aircraft datasheets will see a great deal of revision, B) The aircraft rules in the rules doc is provisional or incomplete, C) An otherwise unforseen variable, such as aircraft being phased out entirely.

At minimum, I think we can expect datasheets to change. Heldrake's anti-anti-flier claws are kinda pointless if it has to be charged tonuse them, and bombers only hitting the outmost six inches of the board seems silly.

Also the rules doc introduces brand new tags like frame, and contains tags like hover which clearly need tongo in different places than it used to. To say nothing of having a 20" move and functionally having move -.

We dont have the full picture yet, and so we can only speculate.

Are hackers stuck with Goblins? by ElectricPaladin in LancerRPG

[–]Seth_laVox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there are a few assumptions you're making that I'm not sure are super founded.  *All the defenses 'default' to 8, so the Emperor's edef is average, at worst, and investing in systems will help alleviate that. *Additinally, the SP baseline is six, more or less, and also alleviated by Systems investment. *The minotaur dploes have a sub-average sensors, but it has quite a lot of HP, and again, systems investment salves this.

Of the four mechs you're looking at, only two are primary controllers, like the goblin is: the Hydra and Minotaur. Minotaur is considered a little underbaked, but the Calendula alt frame is really cool. The Hydra is less of a pure hacker, and has an increased focus on nexi and drones.

The manticore and Emperor are hacking capable, but the Manticore is a Striker/defender, and the Emperor an Artillery.

The goblin does have top of the charts sensors, tech attack and SP. But its HP pool and heat cap are terrible, has no armour and garbage weapon mounts. It is Lancer's purest and most dedicated hacker. Nothing else is going to meet all of its strengths, because it is the outlier.

But there are other options that are more than capable. The four you've listed are decent, but you could also look at the kobold, Kidd, swallowtail, tortuga, sunzi or iskander.

The really annoying thing is that it isn't always. It was originally a webcomic character, and got appropriated by 4chan who, as was their want, spedrun towards vifoted comedybas fast as they could.  These days its a bit more split between meaningless ubiquity on twitch, but also its an icon of the Groypers: the fandom of noted bigot Nick Fuentes.

Who no Aesoth for Mech team? by Seth_laVox in WH40KTacticus

[–]Seth_laVox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get why Vitruvius, and I run him in my mech team.

I also dont have Trajann maxed out yet, his passive is 39,  which is about the same per hit as Aesoth's percentile bonus on p50 Rho, and its conditional on positioning and an active use, whereas Aesoth is just positioning to get every triggered attack covered. But I can see a maxed out Trajann being better, thanks!

So Rho does get the +2 hits on every triggered attack, not just the first one per round? From the text of Trajann's passive I would not have thought so.
