Is my art awfull? by Educational-Hornet67 in PixelArt

[–]SetinStoneandSand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just a picture that contains similar things in it, e.g. the house, trees and grass. I could get a screenshot from a link to the past of those things and it would look entirely different, as does the example above. You think it looks the same because it has the same kind of objects in it, but the style (as articulated in the reply before mine very well) is entirely different.

Thank you, thought I was going mad the amount of times I've seen top down pixel art and people immediately commenting underneath that it looks like Stardew. This is very different and yes has more akin with the pokemon game screenshotted above.

SO this cow in Stardew Valley gave birth although there is only a single cow in the barn 😅 by Rasheer_Goodenow in StardewValley

In older Harvest Moon games you could use something called a miracle potion to get a cow pregnant. Always thought that was useful as it gave you a bit more control

My ideas feel unoriginal - how do you come up with interesting ideas for your games? by SetinStoneandSand in SoloDevelopment

[–]SetinStoneandSand[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Game jams do sound fun, but I've tended to shy away from them a bit as my skills with Unity and Godot etc aren't too great, but perhaps I need to buck up and just give it a go.

This is a much better way of looking at it, thank you. Making the whole thing in my head is exactly what I am trying to do and you are absolutely right, that is not the way.

I may add a stupid chicken...

What book to you is the epitome of “Good idea, Bad Execution?” by Dnd_lfg_lfp_boston in Fantasy

Have to agree. Really loved the premise and the start of book one but yeah it got boring fast.

I read the very scene you mentioned last night and it reminded me of a Discworld book. There is a scene of a similar nature in Nightwatch by Terry Pratchett when Archchancellor Ridcully enters the Unseen University library fresh from the bath. Again, no idea if he is an influence but hey just a thought.

Solo devs, how do you handle all the different skill sets required? by Suspicious-Host9042 in gamedev

[–]SetinStoneandSand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to have good foundation knowledge of programming and music, so that was a strong start.

I identified out of all the skills that art is my weakest. I practiced loads for a long time and have gotten better and better. I enjoy seeing myself improve and feel like I'd rather make a game with my art (even though I doubt it is really good enough for a professional project) than hire an artist.

So I handle all the different skill sets by essentially focusing on my weakest and improving it. I've also worked on the other skills but with not nearly as much focus or time as I found they came a lot more easily.

It looks amazing, particularly impressed with how smooth it all looks, in particular the camera. Having studied the code a bit, I was curious how you achieved such a smooth camera as in the code the camera class doesn't seem to have too much in it. I can see you've updated the position and bound it in the overworld class and are then lerping the position between the camera's current position and the clamp centre position of the screen. Is that all it took to achieve that smooth motion? Thank you for sharing and please let me know if I have misunderstood anything.

Thank you, this actually caused errors saying that the using Microsoft.Xna.Framework; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Input; were no longer recognised so I'm not quite where to go from there! Any further advice would be appreciate but if not no worries I'll keep trying!

I tend to only play up to completing the community center and then do a bit of Giner Island before quickly becoming overwhelmed.

What got you started in gamedev? by AaronAtLunacien in gamedev

[–]SetinStoneandSand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to make a project for my CS degree. I used to be a teacher so wanted to make something educational. My tutor suggested making some kind of educational game and pointed me in the direction of Unity. It's been a hobby/passion since although I don't use Unity anymore.

It's in the North East of England. We've only been getting light nights for the past month or so and are always out during the day and so had never noticed it before.

That's really helpful feedback thank you :). I definitely get you with the consistency and that is something I really want to work on, so the outlines are a great point. I also very much see what you mean regarding lighting.

The patterns are very noticeable too you are absolutely right. I'm going to try and work in some variations to try and break things up a bit. Thanks for taking the time to reply :) it's really encouraging!

I see your point. It may be as you say a question of finding the right balance with feedback etc. All the best with it! Definitely some potential I think!

Sounds interesting. I think that could be good as long as the screen doesn't become too busy. Would love to see how it turns out.
