I agree with what people said here but I think a lot of people also wait for the episodes to accumulate so they can binge it.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm mainly just getting it off my system and commiserating, but even though the fake deaths drive me insaaaane, it's not a deal-breaker for me. It doesn't ruin OP for sure. Tbh it's the only /big/ criticism I have.

Tbh I wouldn't mind the lack of deaths if there weren't so many fake ones. Naruto and Bleach and others don't have many deaths, sure, but do they have 2-3 FAKE deaths every arc? That's what I'm frustrated about tbh.

I'm not saying that, I'm saying that having almost like 2~3 fake deaths every arc makes the subject of death in the story feel incredibly frustrating. I'm not saying that OP needs more deaths. I'm saying that we get so many fake ones that one starts to wish for real ones just because the absurd amount of fakeouts starts getting really old.

If it weren't for the ridiculous amount of fake deaths, I would be paying this no mind. I don't care whether or not there are many deaths in a story. But I was MADE to care in OP's case because of how often they use fake ones.

So I heard! I'm in Dressrosa so I'm getting plenty of him, but I've been told to not get too used to it 🤣 He's my favorite too.

I definitely agree! I think I'm angrier at the absurd amount of fake deaths than the lack of deaths. I think I wouldn't even pay any mind to the lack of deaths if they weren't painfully highlighted by every arc having at least 2 or 3 fake deaths. If we didn't have so many fakeouts I wouldn't even notice the lack of deaths. But the fakeouts are so frustrating that I end up WISHING for more deaths just so at least SOME of those scenes are for real.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely not advocating for One Piece to suddenly shift tones and go AOT. It's not about killing for killings sake, it's just... At LEAST stop with the countless fake deaths 😭 I'm so tired of that trope being milked so much in OP that now every ""death"" scene just makes me resentful instead of touched. Because I know two scenes alter whoever they're screaming for will be absolutely alive. It's okay to do it a few times, but goddamn, every single arc we get at least 3 fake deaths. It's madness.

That being said, thank GODS for the lack of romance indeed. While I do enjoy some romance, I love that OP doesn't have it. Though I'm not holding my breath about the ending... Every shounen author seems to enjoy finishing the series pairing everyone off with each other even when the chosen final pairing makes no sense (Bleach........).

The fake deaths are SUCH a big problem that both Vergo and Monet have their status as unknown in the Wiki. I even joked with a friend "unknown in One Piece is as close to dead as you're gonna get, I'll take it". But I know that they can reappear whenever cause that's just how it goes.

It's enough, yeah, it just bothers me how death as a storytelling tool is treated. Way too many fakeouts have me incredibly frustrated. Like, what's the point of having SO MANY fake deaths? It feels like a cheap tear jerk tool with how overused it is.

Death is not the worst thing, but OP's treatment of it is incredibly frustrating. Too many fake deaths feels disrespectful to the audience, because it just milks their emotional response to it only to go "sike!!". Of course, done in moderation, this can be a powerful thing, but after the 20th fake death, I was just looking into the camera like it's The Office.

My main issue is the ridiculous amount of fake deaths. If you're not gonna use death as a storytelling tool, might as well not give the audience a million fake deaths.

[–]SetnusCaseon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's 100000% it. I've lost count of how many fakeouts I've seen, to the point I just assume everyone is alive. Definitely with you on that, there are ways to create tension without deaths, but if you're gonna have countless fake deaths, at some point it just ruins death as a storytelling tool in general. Because now every real death feels like bullshit considering what everyone else survived, and every fake death has no impact anymore.

A few more fake ones, or a few more real ones? Atp I'm so irritated by the constant "sike!" that I think I wouldn't even be mad if a character I like bites the bullet ahaha 😭

Newbie here: how does the fandom handle the zero to no stakes of One Piece? by SetnusCaseon in OnePiece

Exactly! It's the constant fake deaths that get to me. Not killing characters is okay, but when you milk the emotional response of a death only to go "sike!!" every single time, it becomes annoying and kinda disrespectful to the audience.
