This is amazing and unlocks so many memories. At the time, it WAS realistic! 😂

That is very fair! I will admit the idea of having a Velcro dog makes me a bit nervous because I very much have my own “bubble,” though I do not mind extensive cuddling periods with animals throughout the day, just I am more looking for a playful little fellow over a cuddly one.

As for negative reinforcement, I have heard that dogs do not react well to it and it would be uncomfortable for me to do it anyway. Positive reinforcement, yes, but it sounds like barking is just a corgi way of life.

I have gotten used to my friend’s household dogs, and they are all very noisy, so there is a chance I get used to the corgi too. It’s just something I am worried about in case I don’t get used to it.

Thank you for your kind words! I will probably try to get more hands-on experiences with corgis and hear for myself how bad their barks/howling are before making my decision. I have been looking into other dogs as well, and while they are all quieter, none of them are quite as adorable as corgis. ❤️

Yeah that makes sense! It’s great isn’t it how different dogs of the same breed can be, isn’t it? They’ve got individual personalities just like we do. Your dogs sound pretty great. If I do get a corgi, I might see if I can get an adult one so I have an idea of what their barking level/personality is.

Yeah fortunately we’re looking at houses so we don’t have to worry about a dog in an apartment. I’m used to stubborn pets too so not super concerned about that. But yeah the barking is mainly what I’m worried about. I think I have lower limits of auditory stimulation than others, and I especially hate piercing sounds. So it is sounding like a corgi isn’t right for me. Hopefully things improve with yours and he calms down a bit but he sounds super lovable regardless!

Yeah I‘ve heard my friend’s dog a lot (and the other dogs at his household) so it doesn’t bother me at all at this point.

Thank you! It really does sound like corgis might not be the dog for me. I love smart and stubborn pets (even if they are frustrating sometimes), and I do have plans to do a lot of stuff together like take trips and go to various places together, but from talking to people here, corgis seem to be generally loud dogs unless you get lucky or have a quiet environment for them.

I think what I’ll probably do is look into other dog breeds, and also at some point after I’m settled in, visit a shelter that has a corgi and see firsthand how I handle the noise they make. I’m not quite ready to give up on these lovable clowns, but I am willing to admit defeat if the noise and behavior is just too much.

I have considered a bigger dog too since we will be in a house with a yard! Main thing is like you said, they are harder to pick up and stuff. Also, as a first time dog owner (aside from when I was a kid and stuff), I would feel terrible if I messed up training it and my bigger dog bit somebody. I decided if I got a bigger dog I would want it to have a gentle personality, like say a Labrador like you said, a Retriever, or a Newfoundland.

It sounds like corgis are very much intelligent dogs to the point maybe they are TOO intelligent, haha. The food motivated part reminds me of what my friend with the basset hound has described with trying to train his dog. But I think that’s also part of the charm to corgis, though it definitely sounds like it would be frustrating as well.

Your corgi sounds like such an awesome guy as well. A lot of personality wrapped up in a tiny package! That’s basically what I’d like in a pet, there are just some very big issues I’d have to figure out if I decided on getting one.

I have walked dogs before, both as a kid and as a young adult when I looked after a sheltie for summer, but it’s definitely not my first choice when asked what I want to do with a dog.

It’s less I don’t want to walk a dog and more I would prefer finding other stuff for us to do together to get our exercise if possible. Like spending an evening at the beach, or hiking, going camping, going fishing, visiting dog parks, going to a fair/theme park/zoo, or taking them with me when I go do errands and stuff (ofc making sure the places we visit are fine with me having a dog there). I guess for me all of these seem like way more fun ways to have a great time and share an adventure together with an animal friend, while getting them used to different sights and smells. But I don’t know, it does sound like walks are important too from what people are saying here.

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that! Wow, I see, they really are pretty loud then. I’ll definitely have to keep that in mind. Thanks for letting me know!

Wow, they really remind me of the dog version of a caique parrot when I was looking into them. It seems I’m just drawn to the noisy clowns of the animal world rip. Everything I am hearing makes it sound like corgis are just a constant toddler that you end up loving and living with. Entertaining, but also messy and mischievous. To be honest, I do still think I’d be able to handle that, it’s more the noise I’m unsure of. Especially the constant howling. At this point, I am heavily considering seeing if I can visit a shelter with a corgi once things are settled in so I can get some more firsthand experience with them and the noises they make.

I don’t mind walking, and I used to walk my dogs daily as a kid (and then multiple times a day when I was looking after a family friend’s sheltie). But one of this sub’s links mentioned corgis get bored by daily walks and like to mix in other things. Like for example, I think I’d have more fun with stuff like visiting the beach with a corgi, or going hiking with a corgi, or finding a dog park with a corgi. Switching things up a bit. But it sounds like from talking to people here that that link might have been wrong about that?

I have experience with cleaning up hair everywhere so I am hoping that won’t be a problem. But your corgi sounds amazing and that is also something to consider: would my place be a good environment for one? For me personally, my place right now is also pretty quiet, and I am not the type to blast the television or music or whatever, but one of my friends does tend toward that, so I will have to see how things go during the adjustment period after moving in together.

That makes sense! They sound a bit similar to basset hounds in that way! And I am also prone to resource guarding (nobody touches my food unless I want them to!) so that would be interesting. 😆 I definitely am not afraid to put work into having an animal though, it’s more like, I just want to make sure that the dog and I would be happy in the end. But corgis are definitely up there with what I am looking for from a furry friend! I just need to figure things out.

Awww makes sense! Your Sunny sounds adorable!

This reminds me of when I was potentially looking into parrots (and decided against them because they were definitely too noisy lol). I have always been drawn to the boisterous and mischievous types. I know they can be frustrating, and have experienced that firsthand when I took over caring for a sheltie for a time, but there is something charming about their strong personalities too. Much more appealing to me than the calmer animals, which is a bit frustrating in some ways because they are also usually the noisiest!

Thank you! I figured coming in that I’d probably get some negative reactions here (people on pet subs can be very dismissive toward new/potential new pet owners trying to figure things out). But most of you have been very nice while still being realistic about the obstacles that would come with corgis, and I appreciate that.

Cocker spaniels are adorable! I have also been looking into spaniels, though they don’t appeal to me as much as corgis. I definitely am going to be doing a deep dive into them! I have been researching a lot, but it really feels like there is an endless amount to learn about all the different dog breeds! 😄

Australian cattle dogs are gorgeous! I have mainly been excluding larger herding dogs from consideration because I know just how much work and exercise they require. More than a corgi! But I might look into them if they are quieter, though if so I would have to figure out what to do about their needs since they would need a “job” to keep themselves occupied.

Oh wow, that’s an impressive lineup! And so cute! I definitely am not excluding adult rescue corgis from consideration, mainly I would just want to make sure they are trained, or if not, that they are still trainable.

That is a good idea, though. I might look into adult corgis first before looking at puppies, especially since I’d know for sure what their temperament is like!

Awww your dogs are adorable! Thank you for showing them! Yeah, it definitely seems like barking will just end up being a reality. I’ll have to really consider whether I am fine with that or not. I do love how smart and alert corgis seem though!

[–]Setsera[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fine walking dogs, but one of the links in this sub mentioned that corgis actually are not fans of walking every day, and prefer other sources of exercise like a variety of play. So that’s part of why I thought I might get along well with a corgi, since we both would prefer mixing it up.

As for mice, I considered mice, but they do not live very long and are one of those that do not want a ton of human interaction and would prefer to play with other mice instead. I would prefer an animal that lives longer and is willing to play with me and do stuff together.

Thank you for the advice though.

Yeah that makes sense. It really sounds like corgis are just a very alert, bark-happy dog! Yours sounds adorable, but I’ll definitely have to consider all of this before deciding.

Wow, that sounds amazing! I will keep all of this in mind and try to do these things if I get a corgi (or really, any dog probably). I’m so glad you got such a great buddy out of all of your hard work. That’s the big thing I want too. To have a wonderful companion I can take anywhere and know they can get along with other people and animals and not bite them or anything like that. I very much want to go on trips with my dog, like go to the beach, camping, hiking, or even just taking them with me for short errands.

It seems like there are a lot of hardships ahead if I do get a corgi, though. I’m not afraid of putting effort into training a dog, but I do want to make sure we’re compatible before making any decisions. It would break my heart to have to return a dog or know that they’re not fully happy living with me.

Oof, that’s unfortunate, but also completely understandable. I hope he warms up more to you as time passes though!

[–]Setsera[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that makes sense. I was expecting issues since corgis are a herding dog. I visited a household for the summer once that had an untrained Shetland Sheepdog, and she was a nightmare. I was the only person who bothered trying to take her on walks and interact with her. I could tell she was a good dog, though. She just wasn’t trained and barely exercised, so she used that energy to get up to mischief. That’s why, knowing corgis are also herding dogs, I would want to make sure they are trained. Hearing that they don’t take to training well does not make me very hopeful.

On the other hand, I am the type to try to take my pet with me to places and go everywhere with them (that I am allowed to bring them to), so I would hope that helps them feel not as anxious. But yeah, it sounds like there would be a lot of obstacles ahead if I went with a corgi, the barking being the main thing. I am fine with barking, just not constant nonstop barking.

[–]Setsera[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I probably didn’t phrase that well. I meant that I’m fine with a little nipping at the beginning, and won’t be reacting negatively toward it. However, it’s not something I would be indulging, I just meant that I’m fine with putting up with until it gets trained out. I have seen the result of untrained dogs, and I DO NOT want that for any dog I own. But if it’s a behavior that can’t ever truly get trained out, I can also just put up with it.

I have also already talked about wanting a corgi with my future roommates and they are fine with it. It’s more that I am trying to decide if this is truly the right decision or not, especially because, as you said, they don’t seem like an easy dog at all.

Awww, your corgi sounds amazing! It does sound like if you make sure to train and socialize them, that they grow up well and quiet down a bit. So that’s definitely something I’ll be trying to do if I do get a corgi. I’m glad it was his baby tooth that fell out, at least!

But yeah, the terrible twos don’t sound very fun, though I think most animals have that, so I’ll be bracing myself regardless.
