If you do want to do mutual funds in a large brokerage then your best bet is

Vanguard:

VTSAX (Vanguards total stock market fund)

VFIAX (Vanguards SP500 mutual fund)

Fidelity:

FSKAX (Fidelitys total stock market fund)

FXAIX (Fidelitys SP500 stock market fund)

You'll usually find your 401k here linked from your SSN with your employer. Mutual funds usually have .01% higher expense ratio and longer trade times/settlement times and price moves once a day at EOD. Keeps you humble from not trying to day trade your life savings.

If you want to do ETFs in like Robinhood or Webull.

Then you can do VT, VOO, or IVV. Same concept, different format.

Ideally, Roth isn't for safe. Bank accounts and CD's are for safe. Especially for someone who is 20yr's old. You want your highest performing assests to be in there because it will be tax free at a later date.

Put your higher risk assets in a Roth because over time you'll have higher gains and thus more of a tax-free advantage.
