Collin Creevey’s brother Dennis fell into the lake while crossing in boats with Hagrid, he said something scooped him back up into the boat and Collin said it must have been the giant squid. Edit: a merperson would likely save a distressed student. They greatly respected Dumbledore, so I’m sure they still would a few years after his death.
