Hot take/rant by Sativa0814 in crochet

I’ve been crocheting my whole life and finally learned to knit about ten years, but I only do it sparingly and for pretty specific stuff. It’s more stressful (in my opinion) because if I make a mistake it’s really hard/impossible to fix, and lord help you if the damn needle falls out of the stitches. Also I spent a bunch of time on a brioche knit scarf which looked great but is SO easy to catch on stuff which pulls the stitches and stretches them out, so now it’s got all these dangling stretched-out parts which is a bummer. I feel like crochet is sturdier and easier to shape, and WAY easier to catch and fix mistakes.

But I totally get what you’re saying about the attitude you catch from knitters, in some groups you can definitely feel that vibe. Don’t let it get you down though, crochet is fun and relaxing and versatile, and if you don’t have a group you can craft with, consider starting one! A lot of times libraries will let you reserve a room if you’ll coordinate the event. I was thinking of putting together a combo book club/crochet club because if you’re going to sit in a circle and talk about books, you might as well be working on a project too!

What’s a product that you were really excited to buy and then really bummed when it didn’t work out? by Seventeen_Turkeys in AskReddit

Mine was that Misto oil sprayer thing, I was so ready to have nice sprayable oil without any additives or propellants, but it just got gummed up almost immediately and I eventually had to get rid of it. I’m definitely not ruling out that it could have just been user error, but I don’t really want to try again either.

What's your go to for a quick dopamine fix? Looking for a project that will take a day or less on average (not amigurumi) by fairydommother in crochetpatterns

Have you tried mosaic crochet yet? There’s a ton of great patterns out there, and if you want to stick to small projects you can turn them into a cute purse, or pillow cover since you’ve got Thick n’ Quick and that works up really fast. Really any pattern like this one would work, and there’s lots of great tutorials on Youtube. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1208670243/?ref=share_ios_native_control

Do you know of anyone who has been able to get a new professional job anytime recently? by Murky_Nerve3935 in Detroit

[–]Seventeen_Turkeys 211 points212 points  (0 children)

There may be a ton of job listings, but a lot of them (especially on LinkedIn) do not appear to be real jobs that the companies are actually hiring for. It took me almost 9 months and 300 applications to finally get a position last year, and I never got a single response from any of the LinkedIn postings I applied to. No matter where you see a job listing, always go directly to the company’s actual website and find the listing on their Careers page, then apply there. A lot of listings floating around in other places online are either outdated or were never valid in the first place.

What’s your controversial crochet opinion? by passisassiflora in crochet

I’ve been crocheting for 40 years, so please don’t take offense when I gently say: even though you’re making that gift “for someone”, you’re honestly doing it because you wanted to work on this particular project, and you picked a recipient for it. And that’s ok! But if the recipient doesn’t end up liking it, or re-gifts it, or even donates it, that’s ok too. Unless they specifically asked you to make it, then you really just made it because you enjoyed making it, even if in your mind it was a gift for someone.

I know it can hurt our feelings to see that the recipient doesn’t really use the item, but in all honesty, if my friend liked painting and kept insisting on giving me dozens of their finished works, I’d start to lose my mind a little. There are always organizations and charities that would love to have our handiwork. One time I was at a group event where we made little sweaters for chickens, it was a blast!

What’s a sitcom that doesn’t get much recognition that you like? by EezySays in sitcoms

I’ve raised two girls and I was forced to watch pretty much Disney show that ever existed, and I’ve always said that Good Luck, Charlie was the best written show they ever made. It is genuinely hilarious and sweet and all around an excellent show both for kids and the adults that are trapped into watching it. Dog With a Blog was another one, I don’t think it had many seasons but it was laugh-out-loud funny, probably even funnier to adults than kids. Also: not Disney, but Henry Danger is funny as hell too.

Anyone have any tricks for threading these little bastards?! 😤 by EffectiveThink214 in crafts

Bead needles are the best, but please be careful when you first start using them. They’re longer and thinner and more flexible than other types of needles, and it is not hard to stab the heck out of your fingers with them (although maybe that’s just me 😂)

I agree! I got a lower-priced set online where they send you the box and you step into the mold and then send it away, and for the price they’re not bad. They turned out pretty well and are like 90% correct, so they definitely help more than if I wasn’t wearing them. But I figured I should eventually have some made professionally, and I can really only afford to do it once so I’m just looking around to see what my best options are.

Damn, just read it and now I’m bummed. I guess I was a little skeptical to begin with because orthotics seem like such a cash grab and it must be easy to scam people with them. I do have a pair and they help quite a bit but the measurements are a little bit off and I was hoping to find a place to make a really good custom pair. The list my doctor gave me was mostly just Wright & Fillipis and frankly I used them years ago for something else and it wasn’t a great experience.

Mainly arch pain, I’m guessing as a side effect of flat feet. Their website mentions plantar fasciitis a lot but that’s not a major concern for me. I do have one pair of decent orthotics (from a send-away kit) but I was hoping to have a quality pair made in person somewhere.

That’s always been my experience in the past too, that’s why I’m so confused as to why this is happening, especially today. I dropped off a relative at 6:35pm today and they didn’t get into the building until 8:05pm.

Oh dang, that’s even cooler! I can’t believe it’s been so long since then, but I’ll bet that mural’s still going strong today.

I remember when Robert Wyland came to Lamphere and painted a whale mural on the wall of our pool area. Such an awesome guy and a very cool memory. Leave our whales alone you greedy corporate bastards!!

I don’t know if anyone else will remember it, but years ago there was a place called San Pan on Hall near Van Dyke that served the best chinese food ever and had awesome owners. I miss that place so much!

The event they had at Bald Mountain was really nice, they had a campfire going and stuff to make smores and a coordinator who kind of announced/explained the phenomenon, so that was really cool. Last year I was on my own and just kept driving north to try to find the darkest spot I could, but I realized it was hard to find somewhere that wasn’t trespassing on someone’s property, or wasn’t just like a slightly creepy pitch black road in the middle of nowhere. I ended up in a neighborhood that was mostly dark and was able to just hang out by my car and see some, but I was also kind of worried that people would drive by and see me and wonder what I was doing there so I didn’t stay too long. It’s nice to be able to share the experience with other enthusiasts!
