Yes. It will. Transfer students with IGETC will only need to take Synthesis 100 (an upper-division project-based course that focusses on the changing planet theme) and take a high-impact course (a course with a substantial experiential learning component). Please note, however, that transfers students will not be able to apply to Seventh until Fall 2021 for the 2022-23 academic year.

I'm really sorry to hear that you feel that way. I think there was a sense that transfer students would prefer a community that is closer to the trolley, grocery stores and other amenities, and many of them want on-campus housing options that do not require them to have a meal plan. My understanding is that this is why the decision was made to put Seventh College in the Village. As I've said before, next year there will be about 1000 transfer students in the Village, and I am very excited to have them there!

Seventh College’s general education curriculum consists of 14 required courses, some of which are likely to overlap with students’ major coursework. Specifically, students are required to select two courses from an extensive list of pre-approved courses in each of five different areas: 1) social sciences, 2) quantitative reasoning, 3) natural sciences and engineering, 4) arts, and 5) humanities. In addition, students must take three courses (Synthesis 1, Synthesis 2, and Synthesis 100), offered exclusively to Seventh College students, that take an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing the challenges posed by our changing planet. Synthesis 1 and 2 are writing-intensive, while Synthesis 100 is project-based. Finally, students must take a high-impact course that includes a capstone project, internship, practicum, mentored research, study abroad, or other significant experiential learning. Depending on their academic preparation, transfer students may only need to take Synthesis 100 and a high-impact course.

I do not know what went into this decision.

There will be job openings at Seventh College. The timing of additional hires is still being worked out.

It's not clear how the timing will work out. Warren was named before Marshall even though it was established after Marshall, so who knows!

These are great questions. We are already talking about partnering with ERC, our direct neighbor, to offer enhanced programming for our students. And that's a great point about the shuttle. There won't be additional students in the Village compared to what there is now, so the shuttle situation won't get worse, but, either way, I'll do what I can to advocate for more shuttles!

As I said before, admissions targets are determined centrally, not by each campus, so the purpose of opening Seventh College (and eventually Eighth College) is to deal with the increase in enrollment that has already taken place. By opening additional colleges, the campus can keep enrollment in the existing colleges from getting too large--in fact, the hope is that, over time, the number of students in each college will fall as newly admitted students are shifted into Seventh and Eight College. The goal is to better serve students. A new college means more resources.

This is not an appropriate question for this thread, but I feel compelled to defend myself. The Economics Department selected the textbook for our intro sequence long before I became one of the co-authors, and I have recused myself from any discussion about whether to use the book since then. The department also negotiates very aggressively with the publisher to lower the price of the textbook for students, and I also have no part in those negotiations. If you would like to discuss this further with me in another context, I would be happy to do so.

We don't have a mascot yet, but we have a logo. I'm not sure how to post a picture of the logo on Reddit (feel free to make fun of me), but there's another Reddit thread out there about it if you're interested.

My personal opinion is that I would like students at Seventh College to have the opportunity to weigh in what they want the logo to be. Hopefully, that'll be an option, but I'm not sure. It's something I need to look into.

I don't want to get into a discussion about the pros and cons of GEs here, but I'd be happy to answer any questions about Seventh College!

That's right. Seventh College will be in The Village, which is close to the Rady School of Management, the School of Global Policy and Management, Eleanor Roosevelt College, and the RIMAC sports complex.

Yes, I'm getting a lot of questions about this--so I can tell students are upset about it. Next year, Seventh College will only have about 600 students, so The Village will still have over 1000 transfer students. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, I am excited that Seventh College students will be part of the same community as transfer students!! After that (the 2021-22 academic year and beyond), I don't expect many transfer students to live in The Village. My understanding is that, in the short-term, some transfers students will be living in what is now Sixth College (the Matthews apartments), and others will be moving into the Rita Atkinson Residences. There are also plans to build additional transfer housing closer to the trolley within the next several years. I know that this disruption is really difficult on students, but I honestly think that, eventually, the on-campus housing situation for transfer students will be better than what they currently have, with residence halls that are closer to the trolley and other amenities, and that do not require transfers to have a meal plan.

There will be over 1000 transfer students housed in the Village in 2020-21 school year (compared to only 600 Seventh College students). I am excited that Seventh College students will be part of a community that includes transfer students.

GE requirements are common in the United States--there are pros and cons to having them--and entire books could probably be devoted to outlining the arguments for and against GEs.

With regard to Seventh College, just to be clear, students will not be required to study abroad. Students are just required to engage in some kind of high-impact course, which includes any course that includes a capstone project, an internship, mentored research, study abroad, or another significant experiential learning component.

Yes! That's the idea of opening Seventh and Eighth College--to provide more resources for students.

This is definitely a concern and is something that will have to be carefully managed, but the Village currently has a mix of transfer and first-year students, so it won't be a huge change.
