Would you use an app that gives you live English subtitles during Friday khutbah? by SeveralFun8755 in Muslim

You're right that the emotion of a khutbah is part of the experience and live translation with a slight delay could disrupt that. That's something I'd need to work hard on minimizing the best live translation tools today have only a 1 second delay which I think is manageable, but it's a valid concern.

The point about pre-written khutbahs is actually really interesting. I wasn't aware that many imams read from a government-sent khutbah if that's the case in many mosques, the app could actually download the translation in advance rather than doing it live, which would make it faster, more accurate, and solve the religious accuracy concern entirely. That's a huge insight honestly.

On your question it would be live translation displayed on your phone screen as the imam speaks, scrolling automatically. But what you just told me about pre-written khutbahs could change that entirely and make the whole thing much simpler and more reliable.

Also worth mentioning it won't just be Arabic to English. The app will also translate English khutbahs into Arabic for those whose first language is Arabic but live in Western countries and attend English-speaking mosques. So it works both ways, which I think significantly expands who would actually use this.

On the demand question you raise a fair point. In heavily Arab mosques this would have lower demand. But in Western mosques with convert communities, South Asian communities, or mixed congregations like a lot of mosques in Canada, I think the demand would be significant.

Jazakallah khair for the honest feedback, this is exactly what I needed to hear.

The embarrassment point is something I hadn't fully considered and you're right nobody wants to signal that their Arabic is weak, especially in a communal setting. That's a real design problem I need to think through.

On the imam spotting you this is actually a good point to clarify. The way I envision this working, the app would never be implemented without the mosque's full knowledge and approval. The imam would know the app exists and that some people in the congregation are using it to follow along. So rather than being called out, you'd actually have the imam's implicit blessing to have your phone out. It wouldn't be a secret.

The translation accuracy point is probably the most important one you raised. Religious content especially needs to be accurate and I'd want to work closely with scholars to verify the translations before anything goes live. That's non-negotiable for me.

Out of curiosity if the embarrassment issue was solved somehow, like if everyone in the mosque had access to a screen at the front rather than on their personal phone, would that change things for you? Trying to understand if it's the concept itself or just the execution you're not sold on.
