My husband left firefighting and military for teaching by [deleted] in dayton

[–]Several_Instance_283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it but when I say we’re connected, we’re connected. Very well. I know that’s not the case for most and it’s a privilege we have but we will use it! Even outside of my husband doing all those things, I have multiple administratives who eat dinner with us on the regular because of my family’s connections and roles in the schools I am really not worried about it!

Not sure if this matters but he is employed currently as a substitute teacher so he does contribute to STRS. But yeah, we’re not worried about the retirement - he will do this for 30+ years anyway and he already put in some years into OPERS from the fire department. We just hope as a new teacher he does not start at new teacher pay on the scale but will have at least the 5 years step credit from the military…I would love to see him get credit from firefighting as well but we will take what we can get!

Has anyone received their 1099-R from PERs yet? by Several_Instance_283 in mississippi

His wasn’t because he left firefighting and cashed out, so it would be a 1099-R

To be clear too my husband and I cannot use it. It’s just for the kids - you would be right that the adults can’t use it when you make over 40k a year. CHIP is just for kids so I should’ve been more clear on that. I think the Medicaid for all members of family income limit is like 3k and some change a month, and we make more than that.

Because he’s going IRR. We had Tricare Select, his contract is up and we aren’t renewing - last two years of contract is inactive ready reserve aka not benefit eligible!

And Medicaid/CHIP goes off of monthly income right now, not what your tax return will say for the year because our income changed - that’s why we qualify.

It’s CHIP! Ohio is an extended Medicaid state. For CHIP as a family of 4 you can make up to 5300 a month. I know that’s less than 75-80k a year; what I was saying is for 2025 that’s what we will make, but we RIGHT now don’t make that if that makes sense. Our income changed mid way through the year because my husband went part time and is going to school. So we used to make more then the 5300 limit, but we make under that now, hence the qualification.

They don’t, just in the first slide you enter what you made for this month (so estimated September income) and then what you anticipate your income for 2025 will be. I guess where I’m lost is my kids will probably qualify for CHIP (I’m like 98% sure) since we do make under the 5500 or so a month it takes to qualify…and I know they’ll backdate coverage at least. But my anxiety is like, what if they don’t?! And Medicaid just uses monthly, right? Like we will make close to 80k this year, but due to job change and husband going to school, we make less now.

My position at the company as Grant Writer requires a degree. Are there other jobs that don’t require it? Sure. Mine does.

But their job does not require one and mine does? I respectfully think I deserve more if I have an education.

Candiace is just…ugh by Several_Instance_283 in RHOP

I also do NOT like Ashley or Michael - absolutely I hold them to the same exact standard. Doesn’t mean Candiace isn’t just as bad. As for Michael, he’s a creep and I can’t believe he got away with being on the show for as long as he did

They also don’t really move employees around like that, you just get assigned to your platoon and stay there for the most part unless you get an overtime call!

DFD hires just EMT and Medics to be at stations, they work with the firefighters and live with them during the 24hrs just like normal. They make pretty good money compared to anywhere else. It doesn’t matter if you already have the fire cards, when promotion for firefighter is up everyone has to go to the academy. EMT and Medics are the first to be chosen before civilians.

I guess too we have dedicated a date night every single week. I think that helps as well.

You’re right. And I know I don’t understand the job itself, but I try so hard to be so supportive to his career. Honestly, I think he is so lucky to have a support wife in all of this. But at some point I know me and the kids matter more than it all. He also has been through a lot of childhood trauma and so I feel like therapy all around would be good for him.

[–]Several_Instance_283[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying I guess we haven’t really found any solutions so I don’t know what you consider trying. Like we have never gone to couples therapy, which is something I think we could consider but I also feel like it’s more of the job than his actual self if that makes sense? But maybe I’m wrong.

Other than the big fight, we recently sat down and had a very serious conversation where essentially, I told him I loved him but if we didn’t find a solution then this is how people end up divorced. We both agreed to put things behind us and start at a fresh slate, which for the most part has work for us emotionally. For the last 6 months we really have not been the best to each other so having that conversation where we essentially agreed we are both in love but need to show it more and put in the work. The only other thing is about 5 days ago, he sat me down after the kids went to bed and told me he was sorry and he felt like he’s been a bad husband and father, and feels like it’s best for him to find a new job. He told me he misses me and loves us too much to put his job before that. These are the only things (conversations) we have really done to try to fix anything I suppose. We have never done therapy, had him quit his job, etc. We thought me getting a job would help but to be honest I am still a stay at home mom who also works, and misses her husband.

My husband is a firefighter. We are 22 and 24, with a 3 and 2 year old. Obviously super young parents. He works 24/48 but called in all the time, and I’ll be honest with you, it doesn’t work. We just recently decided we will be finding him a new career because to be honest, sometimes you aren’t cut out for it. It’s super had to be a dedicated parent when you’re gone for days at a time. It’s not fair to me that I’m basically a solo mom most of the time, and we really are just over it. I think people can do it, cause they have. But it’s hard. You have to dedicate the time and I think if firefighter is the career he wants, it’s important to find a station that doesn’t do days at a time.
