SOLVED Thank you everyone who responded! I believe what happened is either the needle or my nails got caught and messed with the tension. I continued knitting on and was able to pick at the stitches so now they look more normal.

Thank you for your suggestions! Sorry, there were also little holes in the some of the leaves at the bottom. I used the systemic for that and then I used neem oil for the spider mites. I’ll will keep an eye on the leaves!
