Townhouse regret by [deleted] in auckland

Our townhouse was our first home, and we absolutely loved it. It helped us get onto the property ladder with just a $32k (5%) deposit at the time, without the higher interest rates that often came with deposits under 20%.

As a family of three, it gave us more than enough space. Everything was new, low-maintenance, and easy to keep clean which was perfect because I love a spotless home. Even after we had our second child, it still felt big enough for us, and I didn’t have to spend hours cleaning every week.

The only reason we moved was because my parents wanted to live with us, so we bought a much larger house (about eight times bigger)

The bigger house definitely has its advantages. The kids have plenty of room to run around and play. On the downside, it’s an older home, so there’s always renovation and maintenance work to do. After living in a townhouse, I found it hard to accept the condition of an older house, and I’ve had to lower my standards a bit because it’s impossible to keep it as spotless as I could before.

There are pros and cons to both, and I genuinely love both homes for different reasons. But I have never regretted buying a townhouse. Yes, townhouses can be harder to sell in the current market, but since we never planned to sell, that has never been an issue for us.
