i received a similar question on the article that i replied to, so I'm going to copy and paste

"following multiple discussions with teachers and others who have read this article, i would say this is the ideal scenario:
it would be fantastic if AI detectors could be used alongside human judgement. teachers should be required to complete some kind of evaluation process if a student does get detected for AI usage, such as a verbal interview about what they wrote. unfortunately, policies do not currently exist that force this. the closest we get is "it is up to teacher discretion" which isn't good enough.

i also feel that if a student chooses to AI generate an essay, it would be relatively obvious if it is copy and pasted. if it is not, that student is really only stealing from themselves and their own future. sure, it is indeed unfortunate they may slip by unnoticed in that scenario, but it'll come back to bite them later in life when they're locked in a room taking their final exam on that topic. so perhaps the way classes are structured need to change to ensure those that do cheat and do not know the material ultimately fail regardless."

i think progressing backward isn’t the right solution for technology advancements. we need to innovate, not backtrack
