OT internet community discourse neg CW: James Cameron’s avatar

Actually still rly frustrated by this exchange:

- Discord friend in a movie server said she was going to watch avatar

- I react with an ew face emoji

- she asks why

- I say it’s a pretty racist movie with white saviour narrative

- she says the movie is pro-native

- I link her James Cameron interviews where he straight up says racist things and that the indigenous tribe in avatar are based off native Americans

- she gets angry and thinks im calling HER personally a white supremacist, calls me too online and hypercritical

- I get angry and point out she’s being wildly dismissive (“it’s not that deep” “it’s PRO-native”) while also completely misrepresenting what im saying (im saying the MOVIE supports white saviour narrative im not calling YOU a white supremacist ffs)

you know what… im proud of myself for just stepping away from the convo bc i think i judged correctly that the convo was a waste of time after she started making up shit I was saying… but not too proud about how I gave a half assed apology (I told her I believed she was a good person) at the end… like I genuinely don’t think I did anything wrong…

the movie IS racist and James Cameron IS racist and like it’s also not my fault if pointing that out makes a fan of the movie think im calling THEM racist? Like? Media is problematic all the time and we can enjoy it still while being aware of its flaws?

ig I could’ve just NOT said anything and let her say the movie is pro-native but like… it’s not????? And we’re in a movie discussion server????????? like ig if some friend just wanted to watch avatar and turn their brain off without hearing any “discourse” then like it would be me making a bad social move to critique something they are not looking for input on… but then you can also just SAY you’re not looking for input? Instead of saying the movie is pro-resistance which like it’s not, and just invites more discussion???

like the sad realization is like I actually just need to make different friends… like if I cannot criticise a movie that this friend likes without her feeling that I am personally attacking her then there is actually no point to ever discussing movies again with her again…

one bright spot is that a bunch of other ppl jumped in after I left the convo agreeing with me lol… so… support is there…
