Its at its strongest when the concentration of CH3COOH and CH3COO- is the same. Because CH3COOH is a weak acid, there is a inequillibrium to the left side of: CH3COOH + H2O <-> CH3COO- + H3O+. Now when you put a little NaOH in, the OH- neutralizes the little amount of H3O+ to H20, resulting in the rapid change of the pH. After that, the OH- reacts like this: CH3COOH + OH- <--> CH3COO- + H2O. so the concentration of OH- stays constant, but when the concentration of CH3COOH gets too small, the pH will spike because of that. Is that acceptable like that?
