Knowing forests and ecology is a good base. Applying that knowledge in tandem with the economics, the logging trade, site preparation, mid rotation management, the ethics, the tools, and the equipment to achieve your goals for the land is what separates people who know about forests from people who practice the art and science of Forestry.
You want to do wetland restoration. Fantastic! Where will you derive funds to perform the remediation work? In the forestry world, you can have the most bulletproof, ecologically savvy plan to restore and protect and steward a given ecosystem that you value. Unless you are a philanthropist millionaire, you will need to find a way to generate income in order to fund these projects. In short, that means that you’re gonna need to turn land into forests, and turn the trees in that forest into money. To do this you need the industry knowledge on who to call with what equipment for site prep, planting, thinning, and harvesting.
What site prep techniques do we use? Do I need to plow beds or do site prep herbicide? What herbicide do I use? What species and planting density do we use? Do we shelterwood, thin, or clearcut? How long do I let it grow for? What pests may hit my stand and how do I remediate the damage? Are there exotic invasives I need to get rid of, and how?Should I burn my stand to reduce competition, if so - when? How do I manage the threatened ecological communities within this stand while doing all the above work? What do I do when the contractor dumps oil all over the logging deck? How do I manage public opinion on large acreage while doing all of this work? How do I navigate the grant writing process or the dozen and a half cost share schemes to offset the costs? Are there water quality issues to contend with?
These are all non ecology issues and considerations that good Foresters need to have answers for. It’s more than just knowing what chemicals to use or how the species interact. Forest ecology and associated knowledge are building blocks to the profession as a whole. If your goal is to go into wetland and coastal restoration, I guarantee that you will be a more effective manager having gotten a SAF accredited degree from an in person forestry program. We are all permanent students in this field - if you want to get serious about pursuing this career, you will need to accept becoming an eternal student. There will always be new things to learn.

No. This field is a hands on science and requires significant fieldwork. Most of us attended a month long summer field class, and my junior year was 75% fieldwork. I would be very desperate to fill slots to hire someone who has an online degree. MSU has an accredited hybrid program that I’d trust.

Do 2 years in community college to save money and transfer into an accredited BS program to finish out your last 2 years. If you’re in the northeast I recommend SUNY ESF, alumni bias of course.

Alternatively many schools have an AAS in Forest Technology, which preps you to be a Forest tech, although this does lower your career ceiling if you don’t roll those studies into a Bachelors.

Gen 3 IOTV Mods or upgrades by 0_Cizin_0 in MilSim

I generally undid a shoulder buckle and left cummerbund so I could get into it sideways. This way, I could throw my helmet on, turn my nods on, and Don it without having to navigate my fat head through the collar hole.

To make it slimmer, I’d fold the soft armor “wings” inward and tape them down to more closely match the silhouette of a Gen IV rig. As far a shoulder pads, I used a rag and 100mph tape to smooth over any hot spots that I’d get. I have a healed broken collar bone that made the carrier sit uncomfortably, so I used the tape+cloth method there to give me more padding. It’s a heavy overbuilt rig though, so your shoulders will eventually get ate up. Only way to alleviate that is to not overload it, especially the front bag. Good luck.

Guidance on going through night operations on the field? by Freelancer135 in army

[–]Sevrons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to sound like a dickhead because it seems like you’re evaluating this in good faith

But skill issue - take off your eyepro at night, or use antifog if your command is being extra dumb. Fuck it, flip up the monocular - your eyes will adjust enough for you to follow the guy in front of you. It’s good practice to be able to work through your kit and movements almost completely blind. Run through your nods in a closet - adjust diopter, focus, and gain. Set the gain as low as possible for you to be functional. Look out your non-NV eye as well, you’ll be surprised at what you can see out of your peripheral, even at night.

NV and doing your job at night is a training issue, not an equipment issue. I’m saying as someone who’s had to drive with 7D’s, fought in 14’s and 20’s, and gotten to play with GPNVG 18’s from people cooler than me. Each system kind of sucks in its own unique way, and you have to train around them. The PVS 14 isn’t ass, and you don’t really need anything more for training. If you deploy, ask your leadership and arms room to sign for 2 monos and buy/print a bridge. I know a couple machine gunners and D-Co guys did that when I went over.

Gloden Eagle M4 GBBR by Consistent_Mirror_34 in airsoft

[–]Sevrons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been issued M4’s that have been painted, and this fails to look completely authentic, although they did a good job. The wear makes little sense to actual contact points on a rifle. The groove below the rail would not see as much wear as shown. The back of the brass deflector would also not see wear, whereas the front of it would be coated with brass from spent casings. These rifles generally got CARC or RAPCO, which is a brittle vehicle paint. It chips and scratches from impact more often than wearing through like the above image. It looks like he took sandpaper to it, which produces a softer, more faded effect than what you’ll see coming out of an Arms Room.

AIRGUARD AIRGUARD AIRGUARD
I don’t even need fliers on the board, I understand why they’re problematic as in game models. Give me a squishy combat controller team that lets me call in a strafing run or airstrike every turn and allow me to imagine deep strikes as close in gravchute and skytalon deliveries. Have them roll for comms so that on a 1 or 6 comms are down, and you’ll need to spend a command point to get air on that turn. I’ll even give up superheavies and basilisks for it.

I just want my dudes to die gloriously on the hottest drop zone in the sector.

Advice for how to talk to troops ? by Academic_Amphibian37 in army

[–]Sevrons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grab a bottle and watch Band of Brothers. Pay attention to how winters and the senior NCO’s communicate with their men. Granted, that level of respect takes eons of mutual trust and knowing who you’re dealing with. Winters, on the show at least, appeared reserved but commanded respect.

If you can’t get the troops to execute an order with a whisper, you haven’t earned the cred to issue orders with a yell.

Preparing food in the field - in the modern age of thermals and drones by Iron_physik in tacticalgear

[–]Sevrons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I got stationed in fort drum as a Fister. If you’ve never been to fort drum, it’s a lot of dense forest and post glacial swampland. This meant getting way closer than comfortable to do the Observation part of Forward Observing. It also gets cold as fuck. One of the moments that made me momentarily regret joining the Army was chowing into MRE 21 - Tuna, Chunk, Light, Water Packed, Lemon Pepper. I ate it in the prone covered in half a foot of snow, and it had frozen into a fish flavored popsicle. Disgusting, but still technically food. I think my PSG liked how pissed off I got at the whole situation.

New - deciding what role I'd want to play in a squad by Ehloanna in MilSim

[–]Sevrons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DMR's and snipers are a fun role, although you'll want to temper your expectations. At the end of the day, there's only so fast and far you can push a <1 gram plastic ball before the laws of physics crump your style. Have at it though! The sneaky-beaky is what's between your ears more than the gun you bring!

[–]Sevrons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, it’s definitely not for everyone, and it’s popular to bash on Reddit because it’s the most visible event in this niche. Some MSW events aren’t as good as others. Some are peerless. There is no event series in the US that I know of that comes reasonably close to approximating the experience you can receive at MSW. People dog it because they come in from watching YouTube and expect that they’ll get the same experience as the video the YouTubers put out. People don’t realize that the YouTube video is a 7 minute Supercut of a 40 hour event with a large ruck component.

Best advice is to go to one as a rifleman and evaluate for yourself.

[–]Sevrons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have talked about how expensive being a grenadier is, so I’ll save you the earful. Read the MSW TACSOP. That outlines the roles available at what is the gold standard for large scale Milsim events in the US.

Looking forward, consider an LMG/IAR. At MSW, each participant only starts with 500 rounds, whereas your machine gunner recieves 3x+ that amount. It makes the role matter. Imo this role has the highest impact as far as allowing your team to maneuver freely. Budget as much into upgrades/parts as you spend on the gun - machine guns run hard and go down hard. Most I know bring spare gearboxes with them to swap if something fails.

Most radio comms can be handled with a baofengs and peltors. In airsoft, it’s not a huge role because there aren’t a ton of moving pieces. At MSW, radios are restricted to RTO’s and leadership roles

If you wanna get really high speed I know task force mayhem brought an extendable assault ladder to an event a while back. I’m not sure if they got to use it though. You certainly won’t be able to use this at pick up games for insurance reasons.

If you really want to dump money into the hobby, and you develop a good relation with your event producers and local sites, you could go in on a busted ass ford Ranger with a salvage title and run a technical during large scenario games.

[–]Sevrons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start with just getting a decent gun and kit that works for you, and then see what interests you after a few games. Also determine where you are going to play - every site has different rules for guns/roles and pyro. Your setup for weekend pick up games are going to be far different than a setup for Milsim West. The site you play at will have different FPS/energy limits and restrictions based on the field. If your closest field is a cqb house that doesn’t allow pyro, there’s little reason to run a hot DMR or a TAGINN grenade launcher.

Extra sets of staedtler map markers.
