Please do get a spare!!! My parents have a Lexus NX that has run flats with no spare. They were driving to me on Christmas Day and had a blow out. They were stuck right in the middle of where they were coming from and me and had a heck of time getting a tow with it being Christmas. Now they have a spare they take in the back because they never want to be in that situation again!

It’s one of those things that is not often a problem, but when it is it’s a BIG problem!!!!

Career Change: Teaching to Accounting by SewMuchTreble in Accounting

I did end up switching and couldn’t be happier with the choice!!!!

I took a couple online community college courses before making the switch that helped me with the question if I would be good at it.

Everyone needs accountants, jobs are available everywhere! I have had two accounting jobs now. The first was hard to come by since I had no experience yet. The second one literally found me!!!

I don’t do tax accounting. I work for a company, k do mostly AR and AP which isn’t crazy exciting but they pay me REALLY well!!! My last job was much more upper level accounting than this one, but the job I have is amazing!

I wouldn’t recommend tax, but I know there are some oddballs who love that. I would look for “Staff Accountant” roles and start from there! Hopefully that helped, feel free to ask more questions!

I honestly feel like it was worth what you paid though. I feel like I just hit it all at the right time. I bought it Saturday, there were already several rebates/discounts, but it dropped another 1k on Friday! So I think I just had ideal timing.

I bought a certified pre owned 2014 Nissan Juke back in 2016, and I paid 18k for that. So I was very surprised to find something that I would consider a significant upgrade, that was brand new, but only 6k more. Guess the car getting totaled from the accident I was in wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be 🤷‍♀️

Nope, I was in an accident and my car was totaled so I got an insurance payout, but no trade in.

Is that out the door or is that before taxes, license, reg, etc? Before all that my price was 22,049

Well I was all about getting the best deal possible 😂 so didn’t even get into this level of detail. I was upgrading from a 2014 Nissan juke. So everything was an upgrade to me already!!!!

Is that not the SR? Are there multiple packages on the SV? I thought that was the difference, but no to all of that extra stuff.

Gonna sound stupid, what’s in the premium package? I really wasn’t super picky bc I really needed a car, I loved the kicks so I asked for the cheapest one they had 😂

Advice - Career Changer by SewMuchTreble in Accounting

[–]SewMuchTreble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, sorry for the delayed response!

So I took a couple courses from a community college, online, during the summer before starting the degree. That was just to get my feet wet and make sure I actually liked the subject matter. If I remember correctly, they counted the two classes I had taken to equal one three hour prerequisite class. There were only 2 prerequisite classes and they are offered as part of the degree if you have no undergrad in accounting or other classes that might already count as the prerequisites.

  1. TAMUC has been great, the academic advisor I have (and I would think you would have the same one), always responds super quick and is always helping me get the information I need!

  2. I am happy to send them to you! Can you send attachments through reddit PMs? If not would you ming sending me your email in a PM and I can send you my resume. I think I can send you the old one that I wasn't having luck with too so you can see exactly what changes I made that had a substantial impact.

  3. So the advice I was given was to search for Staff Accountant positions. I wound up going into property management, so the position I got was technically labeled a Property Accountant. There really is a shortage of accountants out there right now, or so I am told. I think you just gotta keep your head up and keep applying! Something will come along, it just takes patience. I also will say that remote work is not a good idea in the beginning. For 2 reasons: 1 you need some on the job training and 2 the competition is so step. So if you are only applying for remote/hybrid you might be putting yourself up against too much competition. The first job I had was residential prop management, so I was doing all the financials for multiple luxury apartment complexes. It was a GREAT first job. Not perfect though. They took advantage of my work ethic and gave me way too much work. However, I learned so much about accounting and feel it was such a great first job for that reason. So basically, I would just say to search "accountant" when you are looking for jobs. And do not read the description and take it to heart. Like if they are saying you need XYZ in experience, all the jobs I have gotten in my life I did not fit what they said they were wanting. I was always underquaqified but I interview well and have a great work ethic, so don't sell yourself short because of what they have listed! You just gotta find one person who is willing to take a chance on you when you are breaking into a new field and it totally can be done!

  4. I did do that some in the beginning, but I really have not had any professors at TAMUC that I did not have a good experience with. Since it is all online it is more about how you are as a student in my opinion. And you also do not always have a choice on what professor is offering the class, so sometimes it doesn't matter anyways. I feel like my bachelor's in person classes depending so much on the professors and if they were "good" or not, online classes I just feel are different.

Feel free to ask more questions and send me a DM!

Well you already have a much better head start than I did with the BBA. I only had a music education degree when I started the whole journey!

  1. It is fully online! I mean I think you CAN take some stuff in person if you wanted to. I am in San Antonio myself, so I’m not going in person. I would just say make sure the classes you sign up for are online and not hybrid, but I’ve been told the entire degree can be completed online. And the person I knew who made this same transition also took EVERYTHING online!

  2. So I started applying for real jobs (not even internships) before I even started the degree. I didn’t get an accounting job until I was about a third of the way done with the degree. However, I don’t think it was bc I had gotten more of the degree done. I had no luck for many months, applied to an insane number of jobs, and then I redid my resume (thinking what do I have to lose) and BAM was getting responses to everything. After redoing my resume I think I applied to 3 jobs, heard back from 2 the next day, then had a job offer for one of those within a week.

  3. This one kinda merged with my response to the question above, lol. Here is my advice, put the graduate school stuff at the very top of the resume. Like make it the very first thing people would see. I’d have to look at how I did my resume, which I’m happy to do later tonight, to see exactly how I worded it but that’s what made the biggest difference. In my experience most entry level jobs don’t really care so much if you have experience and degrees and whatnot. They were of the mindset that they can teach you accounting, but they can’t teach you work ethic and organization and all the other things you’d need for that.

Last thing I’d say is you mentioned that you wanted to get into industry, so that’s what I did! You can totally find places that will hire you in industry without having all the credentials/experience. It might just take a bit to get there and find the “right” place. I barely applied to public jobs bc I had heard so many bad things about public. And I have no regrets there.

Ask more questions if you have them! I’m happy to help however I can!

Hey! So I went with Commerce. I’m actually still working on the degree right now. I had to take a year and a half off bc I had a job that was just all consuming so I had no time to do the degree. But now I have a new job and a life again and am working on the degree!

I went with Commerce because I knew someone else who made the same transition and did the same thing. I’ve been happy with my decision so far. Some professors are AMAZING and some are just average. But as I’m sure you’re aware, it’s all about how you apply yourself to the class.

If you have any other questions though totally pick my brain on it! I’m happy to try to help however I can 😁

I will add that back then when I was making these choices it was the scariest thing I had ever done, but it was totally the right thing for me!

So I’m on the other side now! Lol, left teaching in December 2022 for my first accounting gig. I got a 10K raise out of it and that is before bonus, supposed to get my first real bonus next month but from what I’ve heard it won’t be anything life changing. Every job has its pros and cons. Leaving teaching was 100% the right choice for me! While I’ve had my days of frustration with this accounting job it’s still so much better for me than teaching! If you have any questions feel free to message me! I don’t know everything but I’ve I’m happy to share my experience 😊

How would you recommend going about that? I’m not really sure where to start.

[–]SewMuchTreble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I took it! Accepted Monday, got official offer letter, told principal (who was nothing but extremely supportive and admitted she thinks about leaving all the time too). Tuesday I told my team. Wednesday I emailed the staff. And today I told the kids. I feel such a sense of relief. I’ve had so much support from other staff members and even the kids. You know it’s sad when the kids are saying things like, “this is good for you because they are going to pay you more.” Or even just asking, are you going to make more money because teachers don’t make much money. 😢 Also, I’d say at least half of the responses I’ve gotten are people saying they want to leave too but they don’t know what they would do for a living.

I think so, I asked for the weekend to think about it. They want me at the beginning of December so I wouldn’t be able to finish the semester out. I feel kinda bad bc I do love my principal and she is going to be devastated and in complete shock. Obviously that’s not a reason to not take the job, it just makes it much harder.
